Slipped disc” might be the most stubborn phrase in back pain. Trouble is, discs don’t slip — they’re bonded to the vertebrae top and bottom. Here’s what actually happens, why it’s rarely as serious as it sounds, and the one thing in your spine that genuinely does slip. 👇🏿

“What’s the best position to sleep in?” Honestly? Whatever gets you the best night’s sleep.

The internet’s full of fearmongering about the “correct” way to sleep and mattresses that’ll keep your spine “aligned.” Most of it is marketing — there’s no strong evidence that one position is best for everyone. If you’ve got a sore shoulder or back, sure, some positions ni**le while you settle, so adjust for comfort. But if nothing hurts, stop overthinking it.

Lying there trying to force the “perfect” position just keeps you awake — and poor sleep is one of the things that genuinely makes pain worse. So protect the sleep, not the posture.

No pain? Sleep how you sleep best. Done. 👇🏿

The words you use to explain a diagnosis are part of the treatment — and most of us were never taught that.

“Bone on bone.” “Crumbling.” “Worst I’ve seen.” Patients carry those phrases for years, long after the episode settles. Frame a body as fragile and they’ll protect it, avoid movement, and brace — which usually makes things worse, not better.

You don’t have to lie to soften it. “Normal age-related change.” “Sensitised, not damaged.” “Common and treatable.” Same truth, far less fear.

Be accurate. Just pick the words that calm rather than frighten.

Bold of you to diagnose to the sub-millimetre and then explain why a structure down by the belt is running the shoulder. The pelvis and the shoulder haven’t spoken in years.😂🤣😂

You bent down to pick up a sock — and your back went. Something that weighs nothing, and now you can barely straighten up.

Here’s the thing: it was never the sock. Your back didn’t get “injured” reaching for it. The sock was just the last straw on a load that had been stacking up for days — poor sleep, stress, hours sitting, a system already on edge. The sock tipped it over.

Your spine is strong and robust. Bending and loading are safe. What you’re feeling is a protective response, not proof of damage — and it usually settles within weeks.

So move, breathe, and don’t write yourself off over a sock. 👇🏿
