💙Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men in New Zealand, but when it's found early, it can often be successfully treated.

Symptoms can include:
✔️ Blood in your bowel motions
✔️ Changes in bowel habits
✔️ Ongoing abdominal discomfort or bloating
✔️ Unexplained weight loss
✔️ Persistent tiredness

While some risk factors can't be changed, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk, including eating a healthy, high-fibre diet, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol and avoiding smoking.
Bowel cancer often develops slowly and may not cause symptoms in its early stages. That's why screening is so important.

📬 Free bowel screening is available every two years for eligible people aged 60–74 years.

NZ Diabetes Screening Changes from 1 July 2026

From 1 July, New Zealand is changing how it diagnoses diabetes to align with international standards. Doctors use a blood test called an HbA1c to measure the average blood sugar over three months.

The cut-off score that separates pre-diabetes from diabetes is being lowered, which means a person currently classified as having pre-diabetes may now be classified as having diabetes.

If this change affects you, don’t worry! Your body hasn't changed, only the label has.
Identifying diabetes earlier means a person can access support and treatment sooner, helping them stay healthier for longer.
If you have any questions, please speak to your doctor or nurse.

✔️ Keeping blood glucose levels under control

Heart disease often develops gradually and may not cause obvious symptoms in its early stages, which is why regular heart health checks are so important.

Receiving your blood test results

We will only arrange blood tests prior to a consultation upon the request of your practitioner, and for annual diabetes reviews. All other blood tests will be determined during your consultation.

If test results are normal or as expected, we won’t routinely contact you. We will be in touch if anything requires follow-up. Some results may take longer to show in the app, and results from external providers won’t appear in the app.

Welcome to Mengyi - Health Improvement Practitioner (HIP)

Mengyi grew up in China and came to New Zealand in 2013. She graduated from Massey University with a Master of Applied Social Work (First Class Honours) and obtained an additional Postgraduate Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction in 2023.

She has a strong interest in working with children and young people. She is happy to consult in English, Mandarin, and Shanghainese.

Outside of work, Mengyi enjoys playing badminton, board games, and photography.

Meet the team - Welcome to Dr Mei - GP

Mei was born in Aotearoa and completed her degree at the University of Auckland in 2015.

She worked in a variety of areas in a hospital setting before moving to general practice in 2019. Mei enjoys all aspects of general practice, especially connecting with patients and their families.

Outside of work she is a runner, pianist and hiker.
