Our precious dog, our best mate for the last two years, was gently euthanised earlier this week. Our old boy had been unwell for 5-6 weeks with big swings in appetite and energy levels. Steroids had helped, so we had a good last week with him before he suddenly deteriorated on Tuesday.
Since then, our grief, the depths of our grief for our furry long nosed friend has been profound. But as the week progressed, a little shrine for our Herbie has come together and I find it enormously comforting.
His collar was first, then his ashes came home. A day later the plaster paw print arrived from the thoughtful vet nurses, and the card from GAP, the charity Greyhounds as Pets where Herbie was an elder statesman and foster dad to quite a few hounds making that important transition to pet life.
Lastly, myself and Brett chose a few special photos and printed them off. The candles and little hound statue were always there. My aroha heart ♥️ a gift from a friend, remarkably resembling Herbie’s car blanket.
So we’ll sit with this for a while, a sacred little space in the window of the room where he slept. The window from which he’d look for us coming home.
And when the time seems right….we will say our final farewell to our gorgeous Herbie. We can never forget him and the bond the three of us shared for what was a precious time in our lives.
