At Wingspan, being part of our community isn’t just about the work we do today, it's investing in tomorrow.

Providing for our community means creating opportunities for the next generation to learn, grow, and step confidently into the future. By supporting and training students, we’re not only sharing knowledge, but we’re also building skills, inspiring ambition, and helping shape the workforce of tomorrow.

Our students are in the final year of their counselling placements and are completing the final stages of their professional training, working directly with clients under appropriate supervision and in line with ethical and professional standards. Each student brings a wide range of experience in the mental health and wellbeing sector, alongside diverse personal and professional backgrounds that enrich their practice. Collectively, they offer a well-rounded foundation of knowledge, strong interpersonal skills, and a genuine commitment to supporting clients with care, empathy, and professionalism.

In 1896, a significant milestone was reached. The legal age of consent was raised to 16 years. This reform did not happen by chance. It was strongly advocated for by the Society we now know today as Wingspan.

At a time when protections for young people - especially girls and young women - were limited, this change marked growing awareness of exploitation and a commitment to safeguarding wellbeing.

In April we celebrated 133 years that Wingspan has stood alongside Auckland communities, evolving with the times but remaining grounded in the same purpose: advocating for safety, dignity, and support for those who need it most.

This piece of history is a powerful reminder that meaningful change starts with people who are willing to speak up, stand firm, and push for better.

That commitment continues today.

It's our birthday 🎉 133 years!

Looking after our community is deeply embedded in our DNA. Our organisation has adapted to reflect the social needs of Aucklanders, as family life and communities have changed. You may have previously known us as Home and Family Counselling Incorporated Society — an organisation that has been supporting Aucklanders since 1893. When we became a charitable trust, we took the opportunity to rebrand to bring a fresh new look and feel to our organisation. Our commitment to providing affordable professional counselling services, and the great team of people delivering these essential services, remains the same. The advocacy of our Founders and those who followed in their footsteps has helped to shape New Zealand and many critical pieces of legislation we all rely on today.

She did it, she SMASHED it!! The goal was 400km, she did 410km. The combined team total was 706km. 🤜 Thats longer than the North Island Or from Auckland to Wellington and back up to Palmy. Well done team.

The team raised $829 and there is still time to donate. If mental health is important to you, help make it affordable for someone else. This is how we build strong, resiliant communities together. 🔗https://step-out-in-2026.raiselysite.com/
