THE FLU VACCINE

As health workers it is our duty of care to protect our patients. One of the best ways we can do this is to get immunised ourselves. Flu is a highly transmissible infection. Patients in hospital are much more vulnerable to the severe effects of flu. As healthcare workers we may be carrying the flu virus without realising it and pass it on to our vulnerable patients. In New Zealand there are approximately 400 deaths associated with flu every year.
Flu can leave you feeling seriously unwell and results in time off work for at least a week. In worse cases it can lead to serious complications or death for some at-risk groups. Even previously healthy people and the young can develop severe complications from flu.
By getting the vaccine you are helping to protect those patients at greater risk of developing complications following flu. Unless there are medical or personal reasons for not doing so, one should do it.
The benefits outweigh the side effects of adjuvants and other elements.
