The importance of regular eye tests.

You wouldn't drive a car without a valid WOF, so why apply a different standard to your eyes which, arguably (and no bias here), are considerably more precious.

It is amazing what a person can adapt to and accept as "normal". And it's not until you experience the clearer, better alternative that you realise what you've been missing out on.

More than that, regular eye tests give us the best chance of getting the jump on those unsuspecting eye conditions like glaucoma or cataracts.

While 2 years is the standard, with all the technological advances in detection and corrections, you no longer have to settle for vision that is "just fine".

Nikku Singh - Owner/Optometrist.

Nothing in this world makes Nikku happier than an ice cold beer, his dog Zora doing something silly and, of course, helping you see better (not in that order, we swear).

He comes from extensive experience in independent practice and private eye hospital settings - namely Gates Eyewear, Auckland Eye and Eye Institute. And since then has become a familiar face to many locals, having worked at Glen Eden Optometrist since 2022.

Our History.

Little known fact - we've been around the block, but have always stayed true to our Glen Eden roots.

First opened in 1979 by Margaret Raby, Glen Eden Optometrist was based further along Glenmall Place. When the local doctors, including Dr Baxter, moved out to become the now Westview Medical Centre, we moved in to take up residence in our current premises.

Nigel Somerville, self-proclaimed football fanatic known and beloved by all, joined the practice in 1984, fresh from university. His partnership with Margaret made it beyond Y2K, with Nigel buying the practice outright in 2001.

And now, in 2026, Nikku Singh is the lucky new owner taking up the mantle. Having been vetted by Nigel and the Glen Eden community since 2022, he evidently passed their test.

Over time, despite a few name changes and cosmetic uplifts to the practice decor, Glen Eden Optometrist has maintained its core purpose - delivering top quality eye care to the community. And we promise to keep doing so.

Hi everyone! Glen Eden Optometrist will be closed tomorrow July 10th for Matariki, as well as Saturday the 11th (because long weekend, why not). Normal hours resume Monday 13th.
