Feeling connected, included and valued is an important part of our mental health and overall wellbeing.

This year's Mental Health Awareness Week reminds us that belonging is more than just being part of a group. It's about feeling accepted, supported and knowing that we matter.

Whether it's reconnecting with a friend, checking in on someone or making time for meaningful conversations, small actions can strengthen our sense of belonging.

Connection supports wellbeing, and everyone deserves to feel they belong.

This month we celebrate World Clinical Exercise Physiology Day. Clinical Exercise Physiologists play a vital role in promoting health, preventing disease, disability and enhancing quality of life.

Gareth one of our incredible Clinical Exercise Physiologists works with kiritaki with brain injury, stroke and Long COVID.

He says

“I am able to integrate behavioural strategies and evidenced-based individualised exercise prescription to help people live healthier and active lifestyles. Generally, most kiritaki I get to work with don’t just have one diagnosis, it’s almost like working out a puzzle with how exercise or movement can be utilized to positively influence mood and function. There is never a one size fits all approach and every day is always different for me as a CEP. I love human movement and exercise science, it’s wonderful to be able to apply my skillset as a CEP to achieve greater health outcomes and longevity.”

We value our CEP’s the work you do and contributions you bring to our clinical team. Happy World CEP day!

Today we thank our Social Workers who work across all parts of ABI – in inpatient services and out in the community. Our Social Workers are skilled in facilitating connections, referrals, resources for whānau. They support finding accessible housing, financial support, facilitating PPPR orders for whānau, connecting with multiple agencies. Our Social Workers work with whānau, ACC, WINZ, MSD, Oranga Tamariki, Specialists, Lawyers, Drug and Alcohol agencies, Counsel for Child, Advocates and so on.

Many of our ABI kiritaki and whānau find navigating the system with multiple agencies really challenging especially with a brain injury. We say thanks to our Social Workers who are empathetic, kind and so well connected in order to support kiritaki getting on with their lives.

This Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, we’re celebrating te reo Māori and the many ways our teams are embracing and sharing it across ABI.

From using everyday kupu and phrases, to joining together in karakia, it’s a chance to celebrate, learn from one another and grow our confidence in te reo Māori.

Kia kaha te reo Māori — celebrating the language, our people and our teams.

Students - The Future of Speech Language Therapy - Te Whai Ao is the theme for this year’s Speech Language Therapists' awareness week 14-20 September. It refers to the light before dawn - a time of emergence, possibility, growth, and becoming. Within the context of this year’s campaign, it reflects the future of the profession, the energy and perspectives students bring, and the ongoing evolution of speech-language therapy across Aotearoa New Zealand.

SLT Awareness Week 2026 also aligns with Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, recognising the significance of language within culture, identity, whānau, and community. This alignment reflects the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists' Association and ABI Rehabilitation's commitment to a bicultural future and to strengthening communication access, participation, and connection for all kiritaki and whānau.

We have nearly 20 speech-language therapists that work within ABI Rehabilitation to support communication and swallowing for kiritaki and whānau across the lifespan and across the journey of the brain injury. As the need for these services continues to grow, so too does the importance of inspiring future clinicians and promoting speech-language therapy as a meaningful and impactful career pathway. ABI Rehabilitation is proud to support future generations of SLTs, providing student placements from all three universities University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, and Massey University. Not only do our SLTs support our kiritaki and whānau recover from brain injury, they are also teaching students how to be amazing SLTs.

We will be celebrating the outstanding mahi of our SLTs working within ABI Rehabilitation this SLT Awareness Week.

Happy World Physiotherapy Day - 8 September

Today we celebrate the incredible physiotherapists who make a life-changing difference for kiritaki across ABI Rehabilitation. As part of our neuro-rehabilitation teams, they combine evidence-informed practice with compassion and creativity to help people regain independence, rebuild confidence, and return to the activities, roles, and communities that matter most to them. From inpatient and residential services to community rehabilitation across the North Island, our physiotherapists are helping kiritaki of all ages achieve goals that once felt out of reach.

If you're passionate about person-centred, evidence-informed neuro-rehabilitation and want to be part of a supportive, inspiring team, we'd love to hear from you. Join us in helping people rediscover what's possible after a brain injury. https://loom.ly/1YSOfCc

Mānawatia a Matariki ✨ As we welcome the Matariki stars, we take time to reflect on the year that's been, remember those who have gone before us, and celebrate the people who surround us today.

May this Matariki bring opportunities to reconnect, share kai, embrace new beginnings, and look forward with hope for the year ahead.

Wishing everyone a safe, happy and meaningful Matariki.

Pink Shirt Day is a reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported.

On Friday across the motu our teams came together to wear pink on Pink Shirt Day/Anti Bullying Day to celebrate diversity, inclusion, promote kindness, connections and respect in our workplaces. We dont do this just on Pink Shirt Day but every day to celebrate an inclusive workplace where people can show up as their authentic selves.

Thanks to our team for bringing kindness, respect, and belonging to what we do every day.

Last week, ABI Rehabilitation and Proactive Healthcare were proud to support a number of our kaimahi to attend and present at the Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment (ASSBI) and New Zealand Special Interest Group in Neuropsychology (NZSIGN) Conference held in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Our teams delivered how-to sessions, oral presentations, and poster presentations covering topics from cultural authenticity in brain injury rehabilitation to concussion recovery through group education and peer support. These presentations reflected our commitment to evidence-based practice and person-centred rehabilitation that recognises the social, cultural, and environmental factors shaping recovery.

A huge congratulations to Te Rina Ruru-Pelasio, Māori Development Manager, who received the ASSBI/Summer Foundation Lived Experience Award for the session demonstrating the greatest impact on people with lived experience.

We also want to acknowledge Jonathan Armstrong, Director of Allied Health, and Kathryn Murrell, Clinical Neuropsychologist and National Psychology Advisor at ABI Rehabilitation, who co-convened this year’s conference programme.

ABI Rehabilitation and Proactive Rehab were also proud sponsors of the conference.
