🌟 Volunteer Star of the Week: Faye 🌟

After moving to the area, Faye was looking for a reason to get out of bed each morning and an opportunity to meet new people. She began volunteering at our Kumeū Hospice Shop, and two and a half years later, she's become a much-loved member of the team.

You'll usually find Faye in the linen, craft and book section. She has a real eye for detail, especially when it comes to jigsaw puzzles! Before any puzzle is priced and put on the shelf, Faye makes sure it's complete. Puzzles with fewer than 100 pieces are checked in store, while the larger ones go home with her to complete in her spare time. A 1,000-piece puzzle can take her 7–8 days to finish!

When asked what she enjoys most, her answer was simple: the people. The managers and fellow volunteers are what make every shift worthwhile.

One of Faye's current projects is carefully unpicking two vintage sheets that had been sewn together so they can be sold separately - a perfect example of the patience and care she brings to everything she does.

Thank you, Faye, for your dedication, kindness, and the wonderful care you give to our Kumeū Hospice Shop and our community. 💚💚

We are thrilled to have Gold Partner Davis Funerals sign on to support our charity for another year. Davis has been a generous supporter of our work since June 2020, having contributed more than $175,000 to ensure quality end-of-life care is available and free to all West Aucklanders needing our services.

“Whether it’s by way of sponsorship or mucking in in our gardens, we are very grateful for the Davis Funeral team’s commitment to caring for our West Auckland community,” says Dean Kelly, Hospice West Auckland CEO, “Their actions clearly demonstrate just how much they are dedicated to ensuring patients and their families have added peace of mind during a tough time in their lives.”

“Davis Funerals is truly delighted to extend their volunteer, outreach, and financial partnership and, most importantly, friendship with Hospice West Auckland for yet another year. We consider it a privilege to support the invaluable work that the Hospice West Auckland team perform tirelessly throughout the West Auckland community every single day; ensuring patients and their families receive the highest quality of care and support,” adds Michael Powell, General Manager, Davis Funerals.

Thank you Davis Funerals for all you do for our charity.

🌟 Star of the Week: Judith 🌟

After experiencing the compassionate care Hospice provided her husband in his final hours, Judith knew she wanted to give back. Seven years later, she's still doing just that as a valued volunteer at our Glen Eden Hospice Shop.

Judith can usually be found downstairs, transforming the craft and book sections into welcoming spaces for shoppers. A retired early childhood teacher, she has a special love for children's books and enjoys helping parents discover just the right story.

Her passion for crafts makes her a perfect fit for the Glen Eden Hospice Shop, which specialises in upcycling, crafts and creative treasures. Whether she's organising knitting patterns, sorting wool and fabric, or making craft supplies easy to browse, Judith loves helping fellow crafters find exactly what they need.

P.S. If you look closely at the photo, you'll spot Judith holding a bundle of knitting needles. One pair is still taped together - a pet peeve of hers! When she noticed it, she simply laughed and said, "You can't win them all!" 😊

Thank you, Judith, for sharing your kindness, creativity and passion with Hospice West Auckland. We're so grateful to have you as part of our volunteer whānau. 💛

Our staff recently came together at the beautiful Hoani Waititi Marae for a special staff wānanga centred around the theme Aroha Atu, Aroha Mai – the story of reciprocity, connection, and building meaningful relationships.

The day was dedicated to our staff, providing an opportunity for connection, learning, team building, and immersion in Te Ao Māori. A wānanga is a space to come together to learn, reflect, share knowledge, and strengthen our understanding of one another. Throughout the day, we celebrated the incredible mahi of our teams, learnt more about our rohe, shared kai, and enjoyed activities that brought us closer together.

Ngā mihi nui to Hoani Waititi Marae for welcoming us into such a warm and inspiring space.

🌟 Volunteer Star of the Week – Meet Sue! 🌟

This week we're celebrating Sue, who has been volunteering at our Hospice Shop – Massey for the past year and a half.

Sue first joined the Hospice family after her sister, who knew the store manager, mentioned that the Massey shop was looking for volunteers. We're so glad she did!

One of Sue's favourite things about volunteering is meeting all the interesting people who come through the shop. She also shares her incredible knitting talent by selling her beautiful handmade children's cardigans, jumpers and booties in-store. 🧶🧸

A self-confessed "knitaholic," Sue knits her garments while watching TV at home. She loves hunting for wool at boot sales and enjoys finding knitting patterns in library books - although many are American, so she cleverly converts the instructions herself! Each garment takes around a week to create, and she's proudly knitted and sold around 100 pieces through the shop.

Thank you, Sue, for generously sharing your time, creativity, and craftsmanship with our Hospice community. Your beautiful handmade creations are treasured by so many families, and we're grateful to have you as part of the team.
