Meet Bandit, the lovable 2‑year‑old rescue pup belonging to VSA emergency nurse Mel! 💙

Bandit is an absolute superstar—quick to learn and always keen to pick up new tricks. When he’s not showing off his skills, you’ll find him zooming around the backyard at top speed or perfecting his tennis ball catching (he’s recently upgraded from letting it bonk him on the head 😄).

This beach-loving boy also enjoys spending time with his favourite people—and making it his daily mission to annoy Rosie the cat, the tortie-with-attitude you may remember from a previous Staff Pet Sunday! 🐱✨

🥊 Meet Boris 🥊

Boris the Boxer came to us as a 3-month-old puppy, weak in all four legs, caused by suspected bleeding around the spinal cord 😥

At the time, he was struggling with mobility and coordination — but after a CT scan to confirm his diagnosis, surgical intervention to drain the haematoma, and a dedicated physiotherapy programme, Boris has made an incredible recovery.

Over the past few months, Boris has regained:
💪 Strength
💪 Balance and coordination
💪 Independent walking and running

Like many patients recovering from spinal injury, he still has a slight wobble — lovingly described as his “drunk puppy walk” — but it certainly doesn’t slow him down! ⏩️⏩️

His story is shared to give hope to other pets and their owners navigating similar diagnoses — recovery is possible ✨️

A huge shoutout to Boris’ dedicated owner and the VSA Christchurch clinical and physiotherapy teams for helping him get back to living his best puppy life!

Midweek mood, brought to you by Yogi 🐾🐻

Yogi came in for a CT to follow up on some lameness issues…
and absolutely shmoozed every nurse along the way.

We’re guessing it helps that his mum is a vet nurse too 😉

Are you cruising through the week like Yogi…
or just counting down to the weekend? 😌

🐾 Staff Pet Sunday 🐾

Meet Rosie 👑 — a 12-year-old calico queen with a serious case of tortitude.

Rosie runs her household with precision: attention is welcome… but strictly on her terms. One pat too many? You’ve been warned!

Rosie surveys her kingdom from atop her cat tree and makes sure her human staff know who’s really in charge. Her favourite pastime? Sitting squarely in the hallway, daring the dog to make a move — and winning every time. 😼

Rosie the naughty tortie "belongs" to our VSA Sylvia Park Emergency nurse, Mel.

Anyone else living with a tiny boss at home? 🧡🖤🤍

🐾 Bubba’s brave journey 💙

Meet Bubba – a resilient boy who quickly stole our team’s hearts 💘

After a serious dog attack, Bubba was admitted to our Auckland West hospital for intensive stabilisation and 24/7 care. Over the first five days, Bubba needed advanced support including a blood transfusion, blood pressure support, pain management, feeding tube, urinary catheter, central line, and dedicated nursing care.

CT imaging revealed multiple serious injuries—dislocated stifle (knee) and hip, an abdominal hernia, and several wounds. Once stable enough, Bubba underwent complex surgery to reconstruct and stabilise his stifle, followed by placement of an external fixator frame.

For 6 weeks, Bubba rocked his frame like a champ, returning weekly for bandage changes (and carefully selecting his distraction flavour 😻). At recheck, x-ray imaging showed excellent alignment, allowing safe frame removal and progression to physiotherapy to get that knee moving properly again 🦵

Bubba is now thriving with strong healing, minimal lameness, and a return to normal life at home.

👉 swipe to see his journey, from a 3D CT image showing his knee injury to bandage change treat-fests.

We’re so proud of this little fighter and grateful to his dedicated owners. ✨ A true team effort and one very brave boy.

🌱 From patch to patient 🐰

A great idea from A&E nurses Amba and Emma has grown into something special—our very own spray-free veggie patch to support our herbivore inpatients. Fresh, safe greens are a vital part of rabbit care, helping stimulate appetite and keep their delicate digestive systems moving.

Hospital Manager Lauren and Head Nurse Vicky rolled up their sleeves to bring the project to life 👩‍🌾👩‍🌾

Our first patient to benefit was Aladdin, a 9-year-old Netherland Dwarf who came in to see our emergency team for lethargy and not eating—classic signs of gut stasis (a slowing or stopping of normal gut movement, meaning food and fibre aren’t moving through the digestive system as they should).

With supportive care, pain relief, and access to fresh greens, he improved quickly and was soon on the road to recovery.

A simple project making a meaningful difference for our patients 💚🌿

🐾 Staff Pet Sunday: AJ 🐾

Meet Alejandro, aka "Fat Fat" (or AJ when he’s in trouble) — turning 13 this year on Halloween 🎃 (of course), our resident indoor “dog-cat.”

Rescued from a bus stop bin as a tiny kitten, AJ quickly became a foster fail… largely thanks to his dramatic early attempts at dying, which ensured he was never going anywhere except staying right with our VSA Auckland West Head Nurse, Vicky — the cat that officially put cats on this dog person’s radar.

Vibe check: emotional — AJ feels all the feels (happiness, anger, love… you name it)… and they all come out the same way: aggressive 😈

Signature moves:
🖤 Carries his dressing gown tie everywhere
🖤 Relocates random household items
🖤 Offers his “help” with foster kittens

He’s such a character that Vicky likes to keep his vet visits to a minimum… for everyone’s safety 😅

Despite the “approach with caution” energy, he’s hilarious, loyal, and completely devoted to his Mum (and the spoodle).

Vicky says:
“From the outside he may look violent and unpredictable, but he’s actually the funniest, most loving, and complex little house panther. He finds fun in absolutely everything, has the best sense of humour, and loves so hard — it just comes out in weird ways, like gnawing on my skull at night…”

We think we’ll just have to take your word for it, Vicky!
