"I wanted to put in writing how much we have appreciated the whole attitude of The Hearing House to its clients. My wife is a retired outpatient nurse who sets very high standards. You have all exceeded them all 😊.

"From the welcome at reception through the planning for the consultation, to the clarity of the presentation, everything was both fully professional as well as friendly. You all went out of your way to put us at ease, and it showed."

And looks like even their cat approved of our services!

It’s feedback like this that make us committed to what we do — making a meaningful difference in the lives of our kiritaki/clients.

Happy Friday 😊

🌟 Hanin’s story 🌟

“Don’t let people tell you what you can’t do. Follow your dream and passion, know your worth, put in the hard work and determination and you’ll get there in the end.”

Hanin received her cochlear implant when she was six years old. With early support from both The Hearing House team and school-based services, her path has been shaped by connection, care and determination.

Hanin went on to study architecture and interior design and is now working in Auckland’s design sector, where she contributes to creating more inclusive and accessible environments. Her photography has also been featured in national magazines.

Hanin's experience is a powerful reminder that inclusion, support and belief can help our kiritaki/clients thrive and pursue their goals — and that no dream is out of reach.

June is CMV Awareness Month. 🌎💗

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common non-genetic cause of hearing differences in children, and it can also be linked to developmental challenges. Yet awareness, screening, and access to care can vary widely depending on where in the world a baby is born.

This year’s global theme, , highlights a simple mission: every child deserves the same start in life, no matter where they are.

At The Hearing House, we support efforts to raise awareness, improve early detection, and ensure whānau have access to the care they need.

To continue the conversation and deepen understanding, we’re bringing the community together to learn, share, and connect. Our next online CMV Aotearoa Forum is scheduled for Friday, June 26 and will be coordinated by our Clinical Director, Holly Teagle. These forums bring together international, national, and local guest speakers to share their clinical, educational, and lived experiences with CMV. Forum VII will include presentations by Dr Corrie Roehm, ENT from Counties Manukau, Anna Mackey, PhD, Project and Relationship Manager NZ Cerebral Palsy Register, and Sarah Percy, mother and advocate for CMV awareness.

Team Spotlight: Rachel Maloy 👋

We’re excited to continue our weekly series shining a light on the team behind The Hearing House.

Congratulations to anaesthetist Professor Paul Baker who was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to health in the recent King's Birthday Honours.

Professor Baker is an international authority on airway management, and has shaped safe clinical practice nationally and internationally. His research has led to the adoption of national equipment standards, ensuring every operating theatre is equipped to manage difficult airways during anaesthesia.

Over his career, Dr Baker has been integral to paediatric and adult cochlear implantation of The Hearing House kiritaki/clients, working closely with Ear Surgeon and Hearing House board member Dr Colin Brown.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

We’re back with the third and final video in Nathan Lowe’s series 🎥

In this final instalment, Nathan explores cochlear implants — how they work and how they help people access sound in a different way to hearing aids.

If you’ve been wondering how cochlear implants support how we access sound, or want a clearer picture of how the technology works, this is a great place to start.

Thanks for following along with the series. We hope it’s helped make hearing technology easier to access and understand 💙

We’ve taken our Connect & Share sessions to Hamilton for the first time!

What started as one session quickly turned into three as demand grew — bringing together more than 20 clients/kiritaki and their whānau to share experiences and tips, and to form friendships over a cup of tea.

From everyday challenges to defining moments, the conversations were honest, supportive and reassuring.

And the best part? New connections that are continuing beyond the sessions!
