👋 Welcome to GP Central,

Dr Carol Cunningham and Dr Sophie Parker!

We’re very pleased to welcome two new GP registrars to the GP Central team.

🩺 Dr Carol Cunningham completed her medical degree in the UK and has worked across hospitals and general practices in both the UK and Auckland. Carol has a particular interest in skin health and has undertaken further training in skin cancer and dermoscopy.

Outside of medicine, Carol enjoys walking her dog on the beach and dressmaking.

🩺 Dr Sophie Parker grew up in Auckland and completed her medical training through the University of Otago.

She has also completed postgraduate training in children’s health and spent time working in clinical research in London before returning home to undertake GP training.

Outside of work, Sophie enjoys tennis, running, getting outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.

You’ll find Carol at both our Dominion Road and Stoddard Road clinics, while Sophie will be based at Stoddard Road.

We’re delighted to have Carol and Sophie joining the GP Central whānau. Please join us in giving them a warm welcome! 💙

Extra protection for our littlest: Free flu vaccines now available for under 5s

From today, all children aged 6 months up to their fifth birthday can get a free influenza (flu) vaccine.

This change comes as flu continues to cause high rates of illness and hospitalisations in young children this season, with children under five experiencing some of the highest rates of flu-related hospital care.

The flu season started later than usual and is expected to continue, so it's not too late to get vaccinated. The current flu vaccine is also a good match for the flu virus circulating most widely this year.

✅ Free for all children aged 6 months to under 5 years, pregnant women, and people aged 65+
✅ Helps protect against serious illness
✅ Helps protect your family and community.

The flu vaccine is also free for many people with certain medical conditions.

Book at bookmyvaccine.nz or contact your GP, pharmacy, Hauora Māori provider, Pacific health provider, or local immunisation clinic. Many providers also offer walk-in appointments.

💉 Free flu vaccines now available for tamariki aged 6 months to under 5 years

Flu is making many young children sick this year, and the flu season may last longer than usual.

From 1 September 2026, the flu vaccine is now free for all children aged 6 months to under 5 years.

This is a good opportunity to help protect your child, especially if they are in daycare, kindy, preschool, or around older whānau.

Children aged 6 months to under 4 years having the flu vaccine for the first time usually need 2 doses, at least 4 weeks apart. Children aged 4 years usually only need 1 dose, unless they are immunocompromised.

We can also check whether your child is due for any other childhood immunisations at the same time.

🔑 Lost Car Keys – Please Keep an Eye Out

One of our GP Central team members has lost their car keys, possibly on Stoddard Road between GP Central and the nearby bus stop.

The keys have a distinctive red wine glass key ring 🍷

Please keep an eye out if you are walking through the area. If you find them, please contact GP Central on 09 621 0387 or hand them in to our reception team.

🎉 Celebrating a special GP Central milestone 🎉

Last night, the GP Central team came together for our midwinter dinner at Mantells Mt Eden. It was a fantastic turnout, with great food, plenty of conversation and a wonderful atmosphere.

The evening was also a chance to celebrate an important milestone: GP Central has now reached 15,000 enrolled patients across our Stoddard Road and Dominion Road clinics.

This milestone reflects the trust our patients and community place in us, as well as the care and commitment of our entire team.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of GP Central’s journey. It was lovely to pause, celebrate together and enjoy such a memorable evening. 💙

💊 Please order your repeat prescriptions early

We understand that life is busy, and it can be easy to realise at the last minute that you are running low on medication.

However, same-day prescription requests can be very disruptive for our reception, nursing and medical teams. They often require multiple phone calls and interruptions while our clinicians are caring for patients who may need urgent medical attention.

Please help us to help you by:

✅ Requesting your repeat prescription before you run out
✅ Allowing at least 48 hours for processing
✅ Using the GP Central patient portal whenever possible
✅ Calling us on 09 621 0387 only when your prescription is genuinely urgent

Some medications may also require an appointment, blood tests or other monitoring before they can be safely prescribed.

Thank you for helping our team provide safe and timely care for everyone in our community.

⚠️ Important scam warning

We have been made aware of scam phone calls targeting Chinese-speaking members of our community.

The caller may ask:

“Do you not recognise my voice?”

They may then encourage you to guess who they are. If you provide the name of a doctor, family member, friend, or another trusted person, the caller may pretend to be that person.

They may then ask you to buy supermarket vouchers, gift cards, or “red pockets,” and send them photographs of the voucher codes.

Please remember:

✅ Do not guess who the caller is
✅ Do not give them names or personal information
✅ Hang up and call the person directly using a number you already know
✅ Never buy vouchers or gift cards for someone who calls you unexpectedly
✅ Never send photos of voucher codes
✅ GP Central doctors and staff will never ask patients for money, vouchers, banking details, passwords, or verification codes

If you have already sent money or voucher codes, contact your bank or the retailer immediately and report the scam to Police through 105.

Please share this warning with elderly family members, relatives, and friends.

🌳🏃‍♀️ Parkrun Community Morning 🏃‍♂️🌳

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at Parkrun this morning!

We know there were also many who would have loved to come along but were held back by work commitments, illness, injury, or other responsibilities. We hope to see you at a future event.

At GP Central, we believe that staying active is one of the best investments we can make in our health. Whether it's walking, jogging, running, cycling, gardening, or simply getting outdoors, every bit of movement counts.

It's also wonderful to see our team leading by example and promoting healthy lifestyles within our community.

🏃‍♀️ **Parkrun Reminder – This Saturday!** 🏃‍♀️

Looking for a reason to get moving this weekend?

Our own **Dr Oonagh Turner** knows a thing or two about staying active! Here she is representing New Zealand at the **World Triathlon Championships** in Wollongong.

You don't need to be a triathlete to enjoy the benefits of exercise though. That's why we love **Parkrun** – a free, friendly community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or simply cheer others on.
