Winter sports are well underway across Aotearoa, and now’s the perfect time to make sure our young athletes are protected on and off the field.

One of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce injuries is by using the ACC‑funded warm‑up programs designed specifically for our major NZ sporting codes.

These programs are free, evidence‑based, and created to support safer, stronger participation for tamariki and rangatahi. These can be easily adapted for our tamariki and are beneficial in getting them familiar with the core movements needed for their sports:

NetballSmart – Netball New Zealand 🏐

RugbySmart / Activate – New Zealand Rugby 🏉

Footy First – New Zealand Football ⚽

TouchFit 360 – Touch NZ 🏉

LeagueSmart – NZ Rugby League 🏉

BasketballSmart – Basketball NZ 🏀

SnowSmart – Snow Sports NZ 🏂

SkateSmart – Skateboarding NZ

👣Happy WORLD CLUBFOOT DAY 👣

Summer‑Rose has been supported by Auckland Children’s Physio, Ruth, since she was born. She’s overcome her unilateral clubfoot to compete in surf lifesaving and has been recognised nationally for her achievements.

For World Clubfoot Day 👣, we’re celebrating her journey to inspire families in the early stages of casting and bracing. Her story shows just how much is possible.

Clubfoot treatment is a long journey — and it takes remarkable parent commitment.
From those early days of Ponseti casting, to the heel‑cord release and the years of boots‑and‑bars wear, every stage builds toward strong, functional, pain‑free feet.

These slides show the full pathway: early correction, the casting process, and the bracing phase that protects the results.

To all the parents walking this journey, your dedication is extraordinary, and the outcomes speak for themselves.

At Auckland Children’s Physiotherapy, we see a wide range of paediatric conditions every day. That means when your baby or child comes in, we’re not just looking at a sprained ankle or a head turn preference. We’re looking at their whole future with specialist paediatric knowledge behind every decision.

Head‑shape differences sit on a spectrum.

Some babies improve with repositioning, adaptive parental interactions and developmental support. Others benefit most from early helmet therapy.

The key is timing — early assessment gives us the widest range of effective choices.

This pēpi showed a very severe head‑shape difference on their initial scan. With early Talee helmet therapy and developmental physio, we saw a shift to moderate in only three weeks — a meaningful improvement that opens up more treatment options.

We’re here to help you understand where your baby sits and what support will create the best long‑term outcome.

We are grateful for our Auckland Orthotic's partner for helping make this change.

Some births need a little extra help to bring our pēpi safely into the world — and we’re so grateful for that support.
It just means we keep an eye on early head shape changes. By 6 weeks, babies should have a lovely rounded head.
If you notice any flattening, early developmental physio at Auckland Children’s Physiotherapy can help guide things back on track.

🏉❄️ Supporting our Junior East Coast Bays Rugby Team ❄️🏉

We’re proud to donate **instant ice packs** to help keep our junior players safe on the rugby field. Quick access to cold therapy can make a big difference in the first moments after a knock, strain, or flare-up during games and training.

Applying cold early can:
• Reduce pain
• Limit swelling and inflammation
• Slow minor bleeding in soft tissue
• Help kids return to play safely (when appropriate)

Ice is helpful for:
✅ Bumps and bruises
✅ Muscle strains
✅ Ligament sprains
✅ Impact injuries
✅ Flare-ups of growth-related conditions like **Sever’s (heel pain)** and **Osgood-Schlatter (knee pain)**

# # # Growth-related conditions in junior rugby

**Sever’s (heel pain)**
Common in active kids during growth spurts. Ice after activity can help calm inflammation at the heel.

**Osgood-Schlatter (knee pain below kneecap)**
Often worsens with running and jumping. Ice after games/training can reduce pain and swelling.

🧊 Activate pack and wrap in cloth/towel (avoid direct skin contact)
🧊 Apply for **15–20 minutes**
🧊 Remove for at least 20 minutes before reapplying
🧊 Use after activity or immediately after a knock
🧊 Stop if skin becomes very red, numb, or painful

Ice helps **manage symptoms**, but it doesn’t fix the cause. If pain:
• lasts more than a few days
• causes limping
• keeps returning
• involves swelling or reduced movement

➡️ It’s best to have your child assessed by a healthcare professional.

We’re proud to support our young athletes and help parents feel confident managing those sideline bumps and growth pains. Stay safe, play hard, and keep enjoying the game! 💙🏉❄️
