Allergy New Zealand Allergy New Zealand is a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping people living with allergies.

Allergy NZ has the advice and support of a medical panel, which is made up of allergy specialists, nurses and dietitians, in order to keep our members informed with reliable, up to date allergy advice. We also represent the interests of people with allergies to government, policy makers and the media. We provide information and guidance to the health, education and food sectors and support research. Since 2007, we have been honoured to have Peter Charles Leitch QSM , aka The Mad Butcher, as our Allergy New Zealand Ambassador. Peter has provided an enormous amount of support in fundraising and building our profile.

A new blood test is now available to help people better understand whether common airborne allergens may be contributing to their symptoms.

Awanui Labs’ Aeroallergen Sensitivity Blood IgE Test, available through BODYiQ, measures IgE antibodies associated with allergens including house dust mites, cat and dog dander, grass and tree pollens, plantain pollen, and common moulds.

A positive result shows sensitisation, but does not necessarily mean that allergen is causing your symptoms. Results should always be considered alongside your symptoms, medical history, and advice from your healthcare provider.

The test is available for people aged 16+ and can be requested without a GP referral.

Have you received inaccurate or incomplete ingredient information from a supermarket bakery or delicatessen?

Allergy New Zealand has experienced a steady increase in calls about missing ingredient information, inaccurate labelling and incorrect advice concerning supermarket-produced food.

Recent reports also raise concerns about allergy awareness and food-safety training among staff working in supermarket food-service areas.

Are you a nurse working with tamariki and whānau affected by eczema? Or do you know someone who is?

The Paediatric Society of New Zealand's Eczema Child and Youth Clinical Network has launched a national nursing audit to understand where the biggest education gaps are for nurses supporting children with eczema. It's led by Faasoa Aupaau, Paediatric Dermatology Nurse Specialist at Starship Children's Health, drawing on her clinical experience with tamariki and whānau across Aotearoa.

The survey takes under 10 minutes, is voluntary, and can be completed anonymously. The team is especially keen to hear from Māori and Pacific nurses, and nurses working in rural communities, so the findings reflect the full diversity of our nursing workforce.

If this is you, we'd love for you to take part. And if you know a nurse who works with children with eczema, please share this with them. The more voices in this audit, the better the support and education nurses receive in future.

Why does timing matter? Because a conversation about allergies reaches people differently when it happens during pollen season.

This spring, Allergy Awareness Week arrives for the first time at the start of September. It's not by accident. Our CEO Mark Dixon explains why moving the week to spring gives families the information and support they need, exactly when they need it most.

🌼 Meet our Allergy Awareness Week 2026 symbol.

This sunflower isn't just beautiful. It's a story. Our board member Gavin designed this image to show what spring allergies actually look like for so many of us in Aotearoa.

The sunflower becomes an umbrella, protecting a child from spring rains and the pollen that flowers release this time of year. But look closer. See the pollen in the rain itself? That's Gavin's nod to "Thunderstorm Asthma," a real phenomenon where storms intensify airborne allergens and trigger both asthma and allergies.

The sunflower is low-allergenic and matches our logo. It's a symbol of hope and protection.

This is why we're celebrating Allergy Awareness Week during spring for the first time. It's when allergies feel most urgent for so many of us.

For the next five days, we're celebrating allergies, anaphylaxis, and the thousands of Kiwis managing these conditions. This year, we're marking AAW during spring for the first time, a season when allergies are top of mind for so many of us.

Whether you're managing hay fever, food allergies, anaphylaxis, or another allergic condition, this week is about you. We're sharing resources, stories, and support to help you feel less alone.
