How much of an allergen does it actually take to trigger a reaction? New research is bringing us closer to an answer.

A 2026 Allergen Bureau report on a study of over 1,100 food challenges across 11 allergens found that reactions at very low doses were generally mild to moderate, most often affecting the skin.

Living with an allergy is not just physical. New research confirms the mental health toll is real.

A large 2025 study from the University of Birmingham, using records from 2.5 million patients, found that people with allergic conditions had a 16% higher overall risk of mental health disorders. Those with anaphylaxis faced a 43% higher risk. Anxiety and depression were among the most common conditions identified.

The Codex Committee on Food Labelling has advanced the global Precautionary Allergen Labelling guideline to its final stage before worldwide adoption. Australian and New Zealand experts played a key role in getting it here.

Big news for the peanut allergy community. Palforzia, the world's first FDA-approved oral immunotherapy for peanut allergy in children, will be discontinued on 31 July 2026.

The manufacturer has confirmed this decision is not linked to safety or effectiveness. Families currently using Palforzia should speak with their allergy specialist about next steps as soon as possible.

Did you know that reusing cooking oil can transfer allergens to foods that never contained them?

New research published in the Journal of Food Protection found that when oil is reused after cooking cashews, measurable levels of cashew protein transferred to other foods like potato chips, at levels that could trigger reactions in cashew-allergic individuals.

When did you last check your EpiPen?

As winter arrives and routines shift, now is a great time for a quick EpiPen audit. Check the expiry date, make sure the device is stored somewhere accessible, and confirm that your school or workplace knows exactly where it is.

Remember: Pharmac has funded EpiPens for eligible New Zealanders since February 2023. If you or your child qualifies, make sure your prescription is current.
