I signed up for a 6 week challenge while I couldn’t even walk properly 😂. Because I needed something to focus on while in my moon boot. Something that would help me look for all the things I could still do- and there was plenty! So I showed up & moved- even in little ways.

The moon boot is off now & the challenge finished on Friday with a photo shoot. I rubbed up against whether to go or not, whether to share, or not. Because honestly, I’m not interested in making this about how my body looks. Which is hard because those ideas are so pervasive. I generally feel good about how my body looks. But I refuse to be a mouthpiece for the patriarchy—regurgitating the same tired message that as women our worth is tied to aesthetics. You can miss 👏🏼me 👏🏼with 👏🏼that.

What I am here for is strength, healing, grit and resilience. Movement that celebrates what my body can DO over what it looks like doing it. This is really what I want to pass on to my girls. Maybe this is my real glow-up- not passing on generational trauma 😂💪🏽

Huge mihi to for her support- listening to my 3-minute voice notes, holding space when I wanted to quit, and reminding me why I started. And to for helping me find so many alternative ways to keep moving with one leg 😅. I literally couldn’t have done it without your help. Thank you to for making me feel safe and comfortable during the photo part.

So here’s my after. After choosing to move through injury with curiosity instead of despair. After showing up for myself with consistency and compassion.

Now bring on the Easter eggs 🪺

I spent five years teaching in a decile 2 highschool in Auckland. During that time, we had a change in principal, and he decided to start offering toasties at lunchtime—sometimes paying for them out of his own pocket.

My period 3 classes would beg me to let them out just a little early so they could get to the front of the toastie line. Those were the vocal kids. There were also quiet kids who wouldn’t join the begging but the look in their eyes—desperation, pleading, the kind of hunger that goes deeper than just an empty stomach—stays with me to this day.

Later, as a dean, I saw firsthand the difficult home lives many of our students came from. I learned that for some, a toastie might be their only hot meal of the day.

So what’s sadder to me than our government promising to care for our most vulnerable tamariki by providing lunches- then not caring about the quality of the food, or if it even arrives- is 1. Turning around and telling these families that they're ungreatful 2. Kiwis who have a lot to say about the school lunches, yet have never known hunger themselves. Unless this is your lived experience or you’ve worked with/ been a part of communities who live on the breadline then please sit this one out.

Telling struggling families to just chuck a marmite sandwich and an apple in a bag is an insultingly simplistic solution to a complex problem. Problems that will never be solved if we continue to sit in our comfortable homes, pointing the finger and judging communities that we don't know or understand.

Aotearoa I believe we can better.

I’ve loved Wicked for over a decade. So we had to take the kids to see the film on the weekend (and again yesterday – it’s that good!).

At the end Franklin asked, “Why are they calling her the Wicked Witch when she’s not wicked? She’s just standing up for what’s right.” 💚
Cue a car ride home filled with chats about corrupt systems that spread misinformation and propaganda to protect their power and push their agenda. AND how people standing up for fairness often get labeled as “the problem.”

What inspired timing when we look at what’s happening right now in Aotearoa. We have political leaders stirring up anger and spreading a narrative about supposed “special privileges” for Māori—when in reality, Māori face some of the lowest outcomes in health, education, housing, and justice. Yet still, they want to erase the protections meant to uphold Māori rights.

So yes, just like the Wizard and Madame Morrible spinning lies about Elphaba, this narrative is as OLD AS TIME: vilify those who challenge injustice.

Maybe it’s less of a film and more of a documentary. With singing.

Stand up, speak up, question the narratives we’re being told, AND make a submission on the Treaty Principles Bill!
