I had not used my own DJ controller since January 16th, so Saturday night at Stargate Forest, with 3 DJs currently in residence, was a lot of fun.
It's so good to be learning more advanced DJ skills from Taode while he is living at Stargate Forest.
The big learning is how he differentiates DJs. To put it into perspective. He runs the festival Yatra NZ, so he has hired hundreds of DJs over the years. Plus, he is an amazing DJ himself.
He explained that anyone can learn the physical DJ skills, but it’s the passion tied to a music genre that differentiates DJs and shapes their reputation.
He suggested that Bertie B has a unique style of music, something he hadn’t seen before!
As a professional DJ, we buy our own music. I only buy music that I love and want to play.
Somatic Dance is different; it’s a structured experience, so I buy the music I need for that journey, but I'm talking today about my party DJ side.
Much of the newer music from the approx 60 billion songs ever written has a few remixed versions of the original.
As an example in my video today, I play a well-known Lorde song with about 8 remixes I could have purchased. My version is more techno-sounding with the extra dance beats added.
This is why each DJ is so unique. For example, Beatport, the site I buy much of my music from, has about 12 million mostly remixed songs. Hence why DJs have their own unique flavour based on what they buy and love to play.
His feedback is that he had never heard a DJ with my unique blend of music. Interesting, as I am still new to being a DJ. I was only trained in 2024 by the very talented DJ trainer, DJ Kimba Jade.
Back to Saturday night, I did just a 9-minute DJ slot for our Stargate Family, and the video is uncut.
It's a quick transition from one song to the other without professionally planned queue points.
In this uncut video, I made two significant errors that a professional DJ shouldn't make.
Please comment when you identify my mistakes, noting the time in the video when they occur.
Plus, I'm not sure a 10-day-old new hip, just had the op, can really be the excuse for the non-conformist dance moves. I am just different 😂
I am out of practice as a DJ because I lent my controller to a new DJ in January, whom I am training.
Another learning is I need to raise my table as my posture is rubbish, bent over, like an invalid who has only had a hip replacement 10 days ago. Ok, well, that is actually what happened🧐
I do wonder how my dance will change when I'm off my crutches!
Have you spotted the DJ errors?
