Another global first for our team! Our North Shore site recently screened the very first participant in the world for a new Long COVID clinical trial. For many people, Long COVID means months or even years of fatigue, brain fog and other symptoms that make everyday life harder. There are currently no approved treatments designed specifically for it, which is why research into new options matters so much. A big thank you to our North Shore team, and most of all to our participants for taking part.

Know someone who's been dealing with Long COVID? They may be able to take part too. Head to our website to find out more and check if you're eligible:

Today, we're celebrating something close to home - World Pharmacists Day!

Behind every clinical trial we run, our pharmacy team makes sure each potential treatment is stored, prepared and accounted for exactly as it should be. It's careful, often unseen work and a big part of how new treatments make it from research into people's lives.

To add to the celebration, we welcome our new Pharmacy Manager, Gary, who has started recently.

Even though our full pharmacy team isn't pictured today, we'd like to give a massive thank you to every member of our team and to all pharmacists for all they do!

Ringing the bell for another first at Optimal - our team recently screened the first participant globally for a Phase 2 clinical trial for eczema. It’s another first for our team and more importantly, another step towards developing more potential treatment options for people living with eczema.

Today’s World Atopic Dermatitis Awareness Day is a good reminder of the importance of raising awareness of eczema and the impact it can have on people’s lives. Existing treatments don’t work for everyone, which is why research into more treatment options matters. Thank you to all our clinical trial participants, your willingness to take part in research is what makes studies like this possible.

Potential new treatments for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD): Developing potential new treatments for DMD begins with you. Learn more about an important clinical trial for an investigational drug being evaluated in individuals with DMD. Find out if you or your loved one may be eligible.

Your body produces proteins that are “stop growing” and “slow down” signals. For muscle and bone, these include activins and myostatin. KER-065 (rinvatercept) is an investigational drug that is designed to act like a decoy or a sponge that circulates in your blood and catches these “stop/slow” signals. Normally, activins and myostatin are important to stop or slow the growth of muscle and bone tissue. By inhibiting the effects of these proteins, it is possible that damaged muscle and bone tissues may have a better chance to regenerate, which could slow the progression of DMD.

If current eczema meds are not enough to control your itching, consider joining a clinical trial to test the suitability and effectiveness of a potential new topical medication. This non-steroid option is not available yet at the pharmacy, but it is hoped to potentially offer:

• Less itching (to sleep and feel better)
• Rapid itch relief
• Non-steroid, no steroid-type effects expected

Participants may get early access to the potential medication and receive study-related medical care at no cost, and compensation (up to $2350 NZD before tax) for completing participation.
MedSafe and the Health & Disability Ethics Committee (HDEC) have given their approval for this study to run here in New Zealand.

Tired of Long COVID fatigue? If fatigue is still hanging on, you’re not alone. Join a clinical trial testing a potential new treatment for long COVID. If this potential new treatment is found to be safe and effective, and is later approved by regulators:

- People may potentially have less fatigue and an improvement in other symptoms that have been present since a Covid-19 infection
- It could help people return to work, hobbies, and daily life earlier

Our doctors and clinical team will monitor your health during the study, and you will be reimbursed up to $700 stipend (before tax) for participation and travel costs. Medsafe and HDEC approvals have been received for this study.

Looking for a T1 Diabetes Monitoring Device? Find out if you or your loved one may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial researching a potential wearable device that could make it easier to continuously monitor both glucose and ketone levels in a single sensor. The hope is that this potential new medical device could give earlier warning signs through real-time glucose and ketone readings, potentially reducing the need for frequent finger-prick testing and helping people take action sooner.
Eligible participants may receive:
• Receive access to the potential device being researched for Type 1 Diabetes
• Receive study related health checks at no cost
• Be compensated for participating in this study
There are no overnight stays. MedSafe and the Health & Disability Ethics Committee (HDEC) have given their approval for this study to run here in New Zealand.
