I will always be grateful for my burnout experience as it taught me what wellness and wholeness could look like when I stopped trying to be perfect.

It’s been a long road since burning out in 2017, and some days I still recognise those warning signs of overdoing it, the familiar feeling of apathy, and the bone deep fatigue that a good nights sleep doesn’t seem to shake.

Healing from burnout is a daily practice of being more than doing. Pausing. Noticing when I’m in overdrive.

But the best thing burnout brought me was the gift of massage. More than just a hobby, this is a gift I share with others to bring real relief in body and mind.

Now massaging limited hours around daycare:

Mondays, Thursdays & Saturdays mornings and early afternoons.

DM to join my waitlist or check out my available slots via link in bio.

Still a few spaces this Thursday and Saturday!

Having a history of anxiety and depression, I was surprised that I didn’t get postpartum depression, especially given 1 in 5 mums get it and more likely with a history of mental health struggles.

Looking back, I deliberately put in place some things that took care of my mental health, so I thought it was worth sharing what I did in case someone else could benefit.

1) Inviting the in-laws to live with us. This was controversial in our individualistic culture, and everyone thought it would be super difficult. Im not going to lie, it was hard at times as it was lots of cooks in the kitchen, but the benefits far outweighed the challenges as we all shared the load (and the laughs!)

2) Cosleeping was a game changer as we all got some sleep. And when you stop sleeping, the wheels fall off.

3) Phone a friend. I made new friends in my Space Group (highly recommend!) so I reached out to them to talk through all the changes and challenges of mamahood.

4) Walking always shifted my funky energy, and I felt better every single time. I even walked in the rain lols.

5) Going back to work felt really, really hard at first. But I quickly realised that feeling part of my community again, and engaging parts of my brain that had been dormant felt really good. And leaving bubba with family gave while I was at mahi gave me peace of mind.

Everyone’s experience is so different, so what worked for me won’t work for everyone.

I think what was most powerful was actually making a plan for my mental health BEFORE bubba came along, knowing how much I had struggled in the past, and not wanting to go through that with a baby as well.

What about you? What helped you the most do you think? Please share 🙏

Not sure if it’s the teething but sleep has been rubbish lately and coffee seems to be the only thing getting me out of the door 🫠

Now I totally get why most parents are always heavily caffeinated!

Hoping this phase doesnt last forever.

Back into term 3, hit the ground running teaching two days a week, massaging 2.5 and parenting round the clock.

Life at the moment is FULL of wonderfully contrasting things, and I’m here for all of it.

As exciting and fulfilling as my Garden to Table and Reo Māori teaching mahi is, my massage mahi is equally as rewarding, in a different way.

Teaching is my yang, and massage is my yin ☯️

My two days at kura are full on, exciting, non-stop, adrenaline and dopamine fuelled, and packed full of interactions that can leave me completely zapped by the end of two days.

Yet my massage mahi has me slow down and tune in to the micro and macro.

Subtle shifts in tissue condition, emotional states, the cadence of the breath, and energetic vibrations. All requiring observations on multiple levels.

Switching from teaching to massage means I shift from heady, thinking work, to more feeling, intuitive work.

It’s a great balance ❤️

I’m now massaging Thursdays 10am-6pm, Fridays 4.30-5.30pm, and Sat 9am-1.30pm

See you on the table ✨

4 things I love about being a mum ❤️

Don’t seem to get enough of these times lately, so when I do get to just “be” with my son, I soak it up and let him lead.

And in the process, I feel so relaxed and present. This is what life is all about 🥹
