The places and assets we rely on tell a story – of how they are used, cared for and sustained over time.

We’re pleased to welcome Jessie Lea MRICS, Special Advisor Asset Management at the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga, to the FM Summit stage this October.

In her session, Stewardship in Practice: The Critical Role of Facilities Management, Jessie will explore how stewardship and kaitiakitanga are shaping the future of asset management and infrastructure investment and why facilities professionals have a critical role to play.

With more than 20 years’ experience in public-sector property and asset management across UK local government and Aotearoa New Zealand’s central government, Jessie is shaping long-term strategies aligned with the National Infrastructure Plan and Cabinet’s asset management programme.

The Great FM Debate made a welcome return to Wellington this week, expertly organised and hosted by the FMANZ Wellington Branch Committee.

Debating the moot, “We should not be refurbishing Wellington buildings, build new!”, Team Affirmative and Team Negative brought knowledge, experience, humour and plenty of spirited argument. Team Affirmative adopted Wrecking Ball as their theme song, while Team Negative chose Money’s Too Tight to Mention, setting a fitting tone for the evening.

While both sides made a compelling case, the discussion highlighted that Wellington’s future may lie in a thoughtful combination of refurbishment and new development, supporting adaptable living, safer spaces, a distinctive skyline and a vibrant city centre for work, play and living.

Chaired with skill, fairness and plenty of humour by FMANZ’s Nix Lavin (PFMANZ), the closely fought debate saw Team Affirmative win by just one point.

A huge thank you to event partner and host, Stantec, represented by Joanne Sawyer. Attendees appreciated the beautiful venue, refreshments and warm hospitality.

Thank you also to our debaters - Gerard Earl, Grant Heighway, Philip Young, Justin Angell, John McIntyre and Peter Affleck, judges; Karen Hayward and Patrick Homan, the Wellington Committee and everyone who joined to support their side, share a laugh and reconnect with the FM community.

The economy shapes every asset decision. But what if caring for what we already have is not an overhead but a strategy?

When the FMANZ Foundation awarded Kamal McEntee-Amziane one of its first scholarships in 2023, it wasn’t just backing his study – it was investing in the future of FM in Aotearoa.

Eighteen months on, Kamal is in the UK working in events for global brands like Formula 1, BMW, MINI, Lexus, Toyota, Adidas and American Express. His FM skills – managing contractors, complex logistics and people under pressure – have translated directly into these high‑profile roles.

Looking back, Kamal says the FMANZ Foundation scholarship changed everything, “It was the best thing that could have happened to me.”

Without it, he doesn’t believe he would have entered FM at all. Instead, it gave him the chance to study while working in the profession, opening doors that have now taken him around the world.

And his long‑term goal hasn’t changed, “Facilities management is still 100 percent my long‑term career path… The experience I have been gaining here will put me in a good position when I return.”

Kamal’s story shows how an FMANZ Foundation scholarship can launch careers that travel the world and then bring talent home, stronger.

Strong attendance and engaged discussion set the tone for our recent Auckland branch “Catch up, Coffee and NZICC – Behind the Operation” session.

With over 60 attendees, there was a great buzz in the space and strong engagement throughout. A big thank you to Ben Hosking, Facility Manager – New Zealand International Convention Centre & Horizon Hotel at SkyCity Entertainment Group, for sharing an insightful look into the realities of opening and operating such a complex, world-class facility.

His perspective on bridging construction and operations and delivering seamless experiences offered real value to our FM community.

It was also great to connect over coffee and refreshments and take the opportunity to explore the wider Facilities Integrate, CleanNZ, BuildNZ and National Safety Show exhibitions.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to the Auckland committee for coordinating another standout event.

A chilly Dunedin evening didn’t stop members joining the FMANZ Otago Branch for a recent After 5 event, visiting four new community houses developed by Dunedin City Council.

Designed to Universal Design principles and built to an 8 Green Star rating, these wheelchair-accessible, low-maintenance homes will soon welcome their new residents - an excellent example of high-quality, future-focused housing for the Dunedin community.

Thank you to Dunedin City Council Project Manager, Tom Commerford, and Neville Pickering, from Breen Construction, for sharing insights into the project, and to Aaron Freeman from Cushman & Wakefield for hosting the group afterwards and keeping everyone warm with refreshments.

We look forward to seeing more members at upcoming Otago Branch events.
