Let's normalise funeral planning.

"I don't want the kids to have to worry about any of it."

We hear that often.

Pre-planning a funeral isn't about dwelling on the future. It's about looking after the people you care about most.

It doesn't have to be complicated. It might simply mean recording a few wishes, like a favourite song, the style of service you'd prefer, or a few details that matter to you. Things that can help take away some of the uncertainty for your family.

If you'd like to know more, our friendly team is always happy to have to chat. There's no cost, no obligation, and you can even start your plan online from home here: https://grinters.co.nz/funeral-information/pre-planning/

What happens to our Facebook profiles, email accounts and photo libraries when we're gone?

Social media pages can become treasured places to share memories, but without a plan, they can also become a source of stress and privacy worries for the people we love.
We put together an article that looks at simple, practical steps you can take now: appointing a digital executor, including digital assets in your will, and deciding whether accounts should be closed or memorialised.

When people think of funerals, they often picture something traditional, but these days, many families are choosing farewells that reflect the personality, interests and wishes of the person they're remembering. There are more options available than many people realise, and there is no "one size fits all" approach to saying goodbye.

Not every goodbye happens in a chapel, around a casket, or at a formal service.

Sometimes it's meeting together in the local park to spend time together and share special memories. Sometimes it's gathering together for their favourite meal. Sometimes it's flicking through old photo albums, reminising about christmases and birthdays, laughing at questionable hairstyles or fashion, and remembering holidays gone wrong. We've had families plant a tree, visit a place that held special memories, and write letters saying all the things left unsaid.

There is no single way to remember someone you love. What matters is taking the time to pause, reflect and keep their story alive. Whatever you choose, we can talk through your options with you.

Winter has a way of bringing things closer to the surface. If you’ve been feeling the weight of grief a little more lately, that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’ve gone backwards. Take things gently. One day at a time is more than enough.💛

When a child loses someone they love, they don't always have the words for it. They might cry one moment and be back playing the next. They might ask the same question five times. They might go quiet for days.

All of that is normal. Children grieve differently from adults, and they need the adults around them to be steady, honest, and patient. If you're supporting a child through loss right now and want to read more, this might help:

Over the years, we've had the absolute privilege of supporting local families across multiple generations. That kind of long-term trust is something we don't take lightly.

Every family's situation, needs and wishes are different. Every farewell is unique. And every time, we try to make sure the farewell reflects the person who has gone, and the love of those who remain.

It's often the smallest things that catch us by surprise, like the chair they always sat in, a pair of reading glasses left on a table, a favourite mug, a well-thumbed book, or a familiar routine that still feels present.

These everyday reminders can appear when we least expect them, bringing back memories of conversations, laughter, and the people who helped shape our lives. Sometimes the most ordinary things become the things we treasure most. And sometimes, they remind us that love leaves a lasting imprint on the places and lives it touches.

As Matariki rises in the winter sky, it brings an opportunity to pause, to remember those who are no longer with us, to reflect on the stories, lessons and love they leave behind, and to spend time with the people who matter most.

For many families, Matariki is a deeply meaningful time of remembrance; a chance to honour loved ones, share memories, and acknowledge that while someone may no longer be physically present, their influence remains woven through our lives.

There's comfort in remembering together. Wherever and however you choose to mark Matariki, we hope it brings moments of reflection, connection, and peace.

Mānawatia a Matariki.
