This morning the chapel at John Rhind was filled with Whanau and friends in florals, gathering to celebrate the life of Hope Benns✨

Hope went to her GP 4 years ago with concerns and was told she was too young, fit and heathy to be unwell…

Tragically, when she was properly diagnosed with Bowel Cancer the news got worse. It was Stage 4, and Hope was only given months to live.

But Hope had 2 very special reasons to put up the fight for her life - her two young sons. For the last four years Hope has created some epic memories for her boys AND used her voice to advocate for and

What a legend.

At just 44 years old, the loss of Hope has hit her Whanau and friends hard, not to mention her Bowel Cancer Support Group 💚

It was a privilege to stand with you today and celebrate her wonderful life.

Yesterday we wore our Gumboots (and work socks) for Callum.

Hundreds gathered at the Methven Racecourse, devastated that mental illness overcame this 18 year old tane last Sunday.

Courageously, his Mum and Dad allowed me to speak the difficult truth:
Mental illness is a liar and a thief.
It lied to Callum about his value, and it stole him from us.

We spoke to the rangitahi and challenged them to start talking to us when they are feeling s**t. And we encouraged them that if their mate opens up to them, they don’t need to have the answers, they just need to listen. Shame dies when our feelings are told in safe places.

It was such an honour to support this Whanau this week… The mana, kaha and aroha shared at the celebration of Callum’s life will stay with me forever 💔

Last year as an independent Celebrant I was proud to take the Pride Pledge✌️

Creating a safe and inclusive space for families is a core value of what I do.

Without safe spaces stories cannot be told, feelings cannot be shared and those who have passed can’t be honoured 🙏🏻

Death does not have to be a dirty word.

This is Rosie Bear - she was given to my Mum in the early 1990s as a gift during her Cancer treatment 💝

Almost 30 years on, my 5 year old boys cuddle Rosie bear when they want to remember their Grandma Rose, who we talk about often.

They know Grandma Rose tried really hard to fight the cancer and the Drs and Nurses at the hospital tried really hard too. They know Grandma Rose was only 38 when she died, and they know it wasn’t fair.

We can’t always take them to her “garden” (Cemetery), but they can always have a moment and a hug with Rosie whenever they need it.

Let’s normalise death.
Let’s talk about dying and loss.
Let’s educate ourselves on the trauma that comes with loss and grief.
Let’s equip our children and the next generations to communicate their feelings and their grief unashamed.

Death is not a dirty word, and funeral isn’t either ✌️

Kia Ora, I’m Liv ✌️

The F Word has been on my heart for a very long time and is a culmination of my life’s experiences…

I’ve been a registered Independent Celebrant for almost 8 years and have had the privilege of marrying close to 300 couples ✨

Recently I’ve been involved in helping some of my couples create farewells for their loved ones, and it has been incredibly meaningful work 💖

Often these family member are left to create your services within a few days and while in shock and experiencing trauma themselves. Their biggest worry is “Have I got it right?” and “Would they approve?”

Planning your farewell is a wonderful gift to leave your Whanau 💕

Funeral doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Let’s own it and make it yours.
