In Japan the ume blossom is known as one of the "Friends of Winter" for blooming despite the frost as we are now experiencing in New Zealand.

A sweet fragrance quietly permeates the air before I notice its source; a white plum blossom, Prunus mume, tucked away in a corner of the garden, has begun to bloom. The tree came with the property, planted by the previous owner long before I arrived, and each year it reminds me that some gifts outlast the people who gave them.

Known as ume in Japan and meihua (梅花) in China, the plum blossom has always carried a special meaning for me. In Singapore, sprays of artificial meihua are a familiar sight during Chinese New Year, adorning homes and shopping malls alike as a symbol of resilience and good fortune. It blooms quietly, often while winter is still lingering, reminding us that new beginnings do not always arrive with great fanfare.

I pause for a moment to admire its delicate white flowers and breathe in their gentle fragrance. Nature has its own way of reminding us to slow down and notice the small things.
A single blossom may seem insignificant, yet it tells us that the seasons are changing, and that even after the coldest days, there is always the promise of renewal. Perhaps life is much the same; quietly unfolding, one blossom at a time.

Travelling by a near-empty public bus into town today, I found myself reflecting on how different this journey is from the Singapore I grew up in.
There, the roads were filled with cars, buses, and people; always moving, always busy.
Here, the bus winds through quiet country roads, open paddocks, grazing sheep, and wide skies. There is space to breathe, and time to simply watch the world go by.
From the crowded streets of Singapore to the open countryside of New Zealand, life has taken me along very different roads.
Once, I travelled through traffic.
Now, I travel through stillness.

Every morning, during my daily walk around the neighbourhood, I am greeted by this friendly cat sitting quietly by the footpath.
Somehow, our little morning encounter has become part of my daily routine. There is no need for words; just a gentle greeting, a curious glance, and sometimes a little pause before I continue on my way.
It reminds me that the simple pleasures in life are often the ones we least expect. A familiar face, a quiet morning, a gentle breeze, and a friendly cat waiting by the path can be enough to make the day feel a little brighter.
Perhaps this is one of the quiet gifts of walking; discovering that we are never really walking alone.

I woke this morning to a grey sky, heavy with thick clouds that seemed to block out the sunlight completely. The kind of sky that often tells us rain, snow, or perhaps a storm may be on its way.

But I have learned not to be troubled by a grey sky. So today, I choose to see the grey sky not as an ending, but as a passing phase.

Perhaps life is simply about learning to wait, to be patient, and to trust that brighter days will come.

A single magnolia flower is all it takes to transport me back to my childhood in Singapore.
As I stood admiring these beautiful blossoms today, I found myself smiling at an unexpected memory. The name "Magnolia" instantly reminded me of the Magnolia ice cream that was such a special treat when I was a young boy.
I can still hear the cheerful ringing of the ice cream vendor's bell as he cycled through our neighbourhood. The moment we heard that familiar sound, children would come running from every direction, a few coins clutched tightly in our hands. The hardest decision was whether to have our favourite Magnolia ice cream sandwiched between slices of colourful rainbow bread or served in crisp wafers. Either choice tasted like pure happiness.
Looking back, it wasn't just about the ice cream. It was the excitement of hearing the bell, the laughter of neighbourhood children, and the simple pleasures of growing up in a time when joy could be found in the smallest things.
Today, thousands of kilometres away in New Zealand, these magnificent magnolia flowers reminded me that memories never truly fade. Sometimes, all it takes is a flower in bloom to reopen a treasured chapter of our lives.
The sweetest memories often bloom when we least expect them.
I think this will resonate with many Singaporeans of our generation, who will fondly remember chasing after the ice cream uncle and enjoying Magnolia ice cream in rainbow bread or wafers. It's a lovely way for my photo to become more than just a picture of flowers; it becomes a bridge between our life in Singapore and in New Zealand.
