Do you get up at night to go to the toilet?

Are you thinking is this “normal”?

If you are under 60, 1x night or if over 60, up to 2x per night is considered normal.

If you are getting up more than this or you are waking with an urgent need to go to the toilet, the best strategy for a good night sleep is to see a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist!

Last week the Liberty Pelvic Health Physio team got together for our monthly in-service training session.

This month's training was a practical session on using technology such as TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) which is an evidence-based, non invasive treatment for OAB (overactive bladder) and RTUS (real-time ultrasound) which can be an excellent diagnostic tool as well as providing feedback for patients to see their pelvic floor function.

It was great to get the team together for an interactive session and sharpen up our skills in this area.

Exercise and Menopause

During the menopausal years it is important to keep active, this for both physical and mental wellbeing.

During these stages it is particularly important due to hormonal changes to make sure to include different forms of activity into your week.

We recommend aiming for 2-3x a week of strength training – this to help maintain or increase muscle mass to help with strength but also for metabolism. Also, strength training is important to increase bone density, this to help prevent falls and fractures as we age.

It is also important to add in low impact exercises such as walking, restorative exercise or stretching exercises like yoga and Pilates. These not only great for movement but also help to reduce stress and to help increase wellbeing.

And of course, to include daily pelvic floor exercises to help maintain optimal pelvic health.

At Liberty Pelvic Health Physio, we can help provide you with guidance on how to exercise in a way that is right for you during the menopausal stages.
