๐Ÿคง Influenza A is circulating โ€“ help stop the spread

We are seeing an increase in Influenza A and flu-like illness in our community and around the motu.

Influenza can make you feel very unwell, with symptoms including fever, chills, headache, body aches, fatigue, cough and sore throat. For many people, the best treatment is time, rest and looking after yourself at home.

If you or someone in your household is unwell:

๐Ÿ  Stay home โ€“ avoid work, school, childcare and unnecessary outings while you are unwell.

๐Ÿ’ง Rest and keep your fluids up โ€“ drink regularly and give your body time to recover.

๐Ÿงผ Wash your hands regularly โ€“ good hand hygiene helps reduce the spread of viruses.

๐Ÿคง Cover coughs and sneezes โ€“ use your elbow or a tissue, dispose of tissues and wash your hands afterwards.

โค๏ธ Look out for each other โ€“ particularly pฤ“pi and young children, older people, pregnant people and those who may be more vulnerable to becoming seriously unwell.

๐Ÿ“ž Need some help or advice?

If you are unsure what to do, there are a number of options available:

Burwood Health
๐Ÿ“ž 03 383 0219 โ€“ call our team during our usual opening hours for advice or to arrange an appointment.

Healthline
๐Ÿ“ž 0800 611 116 โ€“ free health advice from trained health professionals, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Pegasus 24 Hour Surgery
๐Ÿ“ž 03 365 7777 โ€“ for urgent medical care when your usual general practice is closed.

๐Ÿšจ If it is an emergency

If you or someone you are caring for is seriously unwell, has difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, becomes confused or difficult to wake, or you are seriously concerned about their condition:

โžก๏ธ Call 111 for an ambulance, or
โžก๏ธ Present to the Christchurch Hospital Emergency Department.

If you need to visit Burwood Health while experiencing cough, fever or other respiratory symptoms, please let our team know before you arrive. This helps us protect other patients, particularly those who are more vulnerable, as well as our staff.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Managing Winter Asthma โ€“ Breathe Easier This Winter ๐Ÿ’™

Winter can be a challenging time for people living with asthma. Cold air, seasonal viruses and indoor allergens can all trigger symptoms and increase the risk of flare-ups.

A little preparation now can help you stay well throughout the colder months.

Here's your winter asthma checklist:

โœ… Check your inhalers
Make sure your reliever and preventer inhalers are in date, working properly and that you have enough medication on hand.

๐Ÿ“‹ Review your Asthma Action Plan
Your action plan is an important guide for managing your asthma. Make sure it's up to date and that you and your whฤnau know what to do if your symptoms worsen.

๐Ÿฉบ Book an asthma review
If you've noticed you're using your reliever inhaler more often, experiencing more coughing or wheezing, waking at night, or your asthma doesn't feel as well controlled, it's time to book a review with your GP or nurse.

๐Ÿก Reduce winter triggers at home
Keep your home warm and well ventilated, reduce dampness and mould where possible, and avoid exposure to smoke and strong fragrances that may trigger symptoms.

๐Ÿ’š Don't ignore worsening symptoms
Early assessment and the right treatment can help prevent serious asthma attacks and keep you healthy and active throughout winter.

If you're concerned about your asthma or it's been a while since your last review, our team at Burwood Health is here to help.

๐Ÿ“ž Contact us today to book your Winter Asthma Review.

๐Ÿ’™ Looking After Your Mental Health This Winter โ„๏ธ

As the days become shorter and the temperatures drop, it's common to notice changes in your mood, energy levels and motivation. Winter can be challenging for many people, but there are simple ways to support your mental wellbeing.

Here are a few ideas to help you through the colder months:

๐ŸŒฟ Get outside every day
Even 15โ€“20 minutes of natural daylight and fresh air can help improve your mood and support better sleep.

๐Ÿšถ Keep moving
Whether it's a walk, stretching, gardening or your favourite form of exercise, staying active releases endorphins that help you feel better.

โ˜• Stay connected
Reach out to friends, whฤnau or neighbours. A coffee, phone call or shared walk can make a real difference.

๐Ÿฅฃ Nourish your body
Warm, healthy meals and staying hydrated help support both your physical and mental wellbeing.

๐Ÿ˜ด Prioritise sleep
Aim for a consistent bedtime routine and give yourself time to rest and recharge.

๐Ÿ’› Be kind to yourself
It's okay if you're not feeling your best. Take things one day at a time and make space for activities that bring you joy.

Remember, you don't have to face difficult days alone. If low mood, anxiety or stress are starting to affect your daily life, please reach out. Our team at Burwood Health is here to listen, support and help you find the care that's right for you.

๐Ÿ“ž If you need to talk to someone urgently, you can call or text 1737 at any time to speak with a trained counsellorโ€”free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

๐Ÿ’š Winter won't last forever, and neither do difficult days. Reach out, stay connected and take care of yourself this season.

๐Ÿฅฃ Healthy Winter Eating โ€“ Nourish Your Body This Winter โ„๏ธ

The foods we eat play an important role in keeping our bodies healthy during the colder months. While there's no single food that can prevent illness, eating a balanced, nutritious diet can help support your immune system and keep you feeling your best.

Here are a few simple ways to eat well this winter:

๐Ÿฅฃ Enjoy warm, nourishing meals
Soups, stews and casseroles are a great way to stay warm while packing in plenty of vegetables, protein and wholegrains.

๐Ÿฅ• Choose seasonal vegetables
Winter favourites like pumpkin, kลซmara, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and leafy greens are rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre.

๐ŸŒˆ Add colour to your plate
A variety of colourful fruit and vegetables provides a wide range of nutrients that help support overall health.

๐Ÿ’ง Stay hydrated
It's easy to forget to drink enough water in winter. Keep a water bottle nearby and enjoy warm herbal teas or soups to help maintain hydration.

๐ŸŠ Include immune-supporting foods
Foods such as citrus fruits, berries, garlic, ginger, yoghurt, nuts, seeds and legumes can all be part of a healthy, balanced diet.

๐Ÿ’š Remember the basics
Good nutrition works best alongside regular exercise, quality sleep, managing stress and keeping up to date with recommended vaccinations.

Small, healthy choices each day can make a big difference to how you feel throughout winter.

If you'd like advice about nutrition or managing your health this winter, our team at Burwood Health is here to help.

๐Ÿ’š Nourish your body, support your immunity and enjoy a healthy winter.

To help us provide safe, timely, and high-quality care, Burwood Health has made some changes to how we manage clinical requests received by email.

Effective immediately, we are no longer able to process clinical requests via email. This includes requests for:

โ€ข Changes to prescriptions
โ€ข WINZ medical certificates
โ€ข ACC medical certificates
โ€ข Medical advice or clinical input from your GP
โ€ข Other requests that require a clinician to assess your healthcare needs

If your request requires clinical assessment, you will need to book an appointment with one of our clinical team members. In some cases, one of our nurses may contact you first to discuss your request and determine the most appropriate next step.

๐Ÿ“… Appointments cannot be booked by email.
To make an appointment, please:
๐Ÿ“ž Call us on 03 383 0219, or
๐Ÿ“ฑ Book through your MyIndici app.

These changes ensure our clinicians have the time and information needed to provide safe, appropriate care, while allowing us to respond more efficiently to all patients.

Thank you for your understanding and for supporting our team as we continue to provide the best possible care to our community. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’š Is It Time for Your Regular Health Check?

If you're living with a long-term health condition, regular check-ups are one of the best ways to stay well and reduce the risk of complications.

At Burwood Health, we encourage patients with chronic conditions to book routine reviews, including those living with:

๐Ÿฉบ Diabetes
๐Ÿ’™ Heart disease
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Asthma
๐Ÿซ COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

These regular appointments allow us to:
โœ… Review how you're feeling and how your condition is being managed.
โœ… Check your medications and make any necessary adjustments.
โœ… Monitor your blood pressure, blood sugar, breathing or heart health.
โœ… Arrange any blood tests or other investigations if needed.
โœ… Help you stay well and prevent avoidable complications.

Even if you're feeling well, these reviews are an important part of keeping your health on track.

If it's been a while since your last check-upโ€”or you've noticed any changes in your symptomsโ€”now is a great time to book an appointment.

๐Ÿ“ž Contact Burwood Health to schedule your chronic condition review.

๐Ÿฆ  Viral vs Bacterial Infections โ€“ What's the Difference? ๐Ÿ’Š

It's a common question we hear during winter: "Do I need antibiotics?"

The answer depends on what's causing your illness. Understanding the difference between viral and bacterial infections helps ensure antibiotics are used safely and effectively.

๐Ÿฆ  Viral infections

Viruses are the most common cause of winter illnesses, including:
โœ”๏ธ The common cold
โœ”๏ธ Influenza (the flu)
โœ”๏ธ Most sore throats
โœ”๏ธ Many coughs and bronchitis

โŒ Antibiotics do not work against viruses. They won't help you recover faster or ease your symptoms.

The best treatment is usually:
๐Ÿ’ง Plenty of fluids
๐Ÿ˜ด Rest
๐Ÿค’ Managing symptoms with appropriate medicines
โณ Giving your body time to recover

๐Ÿฆ  Bacterial infections

Bacteria can cause illnesses such as:
โœ”๏ธ Strep throat
โœ”๏ธ Some ear infections
โœ”๏ธ Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
โœ”๏ธ Some chest and skin infections

โœ… Antibiotics can be effective for bacterial infections when they are clinically appropriate. Your GP will assess your symptoms, examine you if needed, and decide whether antibiotics are the right treatment.

๐Ÿ’š Why does this matter?

Using antibiotics when they aren't needed can:
โ€ข Increase antibiotic resistance, making infections harder to treat in the future.
โ€ข Cause unwanted side effects.
โ€ข Reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics when they're truly needed.

At Burwood Health, we're committed to using antibiotics responsibly to help protect the health of our patients and our wider community.

If you're feeling unwell and aren't sure what type of infection you may have, book an appointment with our team. We'll help determine the most appropriate treatment for you.

๐Ÿ’š Using antibiotics wisely today helps keep them working for tomorrow.

๐Ÿ’Š Don't Let Your Medication Run Out

Taking your medication regularly is an important part of staying healthy. To help avoid any interruptions, we encourage you to request your repeat prescriptions before you run out.

Here are a few helpful reminders:

๐Ÿ“… Plan ahead
Request your repeat prescription at least 5 working days before you need your medication. This allows enough time for your GP to review and approve your request, and for your pharmacy to prepare it.

๐Ÿ’ป The easiest way to request a repeat prescription
Use the MyIndici Patient Portal or complete the repeat prescription request form on our website.

๐Ÿ’Š Remember your pharmacy also needs time
Once your prescription has been sent, your chosen pharmacy may need additional time to dispense your medicationโ€”especially during busy periods.

๐Ÿ“ž Need your medication urgently?
If you've run out or your request is urgent, please contact our reception team as soon as possible. While we'll always do our best to help, urgent requests may not always be possible and may incur an additional fee.

Planning ahead helps ensure you receive your medication on time and allows our clinical team to process requests safely and efficiently.

๐Ÿ’š Thank you for helping us provide the best possible care for all our patients.
