Like many cancers, stomach cancer is often easier to treat when it's diagnosed early.

That's why it's important not to ignore ongoing digestive symptoms or assume they'll simply go away with time. If you've noticed persistent changes that concern you, speak with your GP.

Investigating symptoms early can provide reassurance when it's nothing serious or help ensure the right treatment can begin as soon as possible if it is.

When someone is diagnosed with cancer, the impact is often felt by the people closest to them as well.

Partners, family members, friends and carers all play an important role, offering practical help and emotional support throughout the treatment journey. That's why it's important for support people to look after their own wellbeing too.

Through our partnership with Encompass Health, counselling services are available to help patients and their families navigate the emotional impact of cancer with professional guidance and compassionate support.

Chemotherapy can be one of the most unfamiliar parts of cancer treatment until patients experience it themselves.

What often surprises patients is how carefully planned and closely monitored each treatment cycle is. Chemotherapy is tailored to the specific type of cancer and adjusted throughout treatment based on how the patient is responding.

At St George's Cancer Centre, our team works closely with patients throughout their treatment to help manage side effects and ensure care remains as effective and manageable as possible.

St George's Cancer Care Centre provides chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Discover more about this treatment technique.

Cancer treatment involves many medical terms that can feel unfamiliar, and understanding what they mean is an important part of helping people feel informed and confident in their care.

Two terms that are commonly used are curative and palliative treatment. Curative treatment aims to remove or destroy the cancer where possible, while palliative treatment focuses on managing symptoms, improving quality of life and, in many cases, helping people live well for longer.

Your specialist team will take the time to explain your individual diagnosis, the goals of your treatment, and what those recommendations mean for you.

Most people experience indigestion or heartburn from time to time, and in many cases it's nothing serious.

However, symptoms that are persistent, worsening or don't respond to usual treatment should always be discussed with your GP.

Other symptoms of stomach cancer can include difficulty swallowing, feeling full after eating only a small amount, unexplained weight loss, ongoing stomach pain or blood in the stool.

While these symptoms are often caused by other conditions, getting them checked early is the best way to find answers and, if needed, begin treatment sooner.

Cancer treatment often involves more than one specialist and more than one type of treatment.

St George's Cancer Centre brings together medical oncology, haematology, radiation oncology, advanced treatment technology and supportive care in one location.

Having services working closely together helps create a more coordinated experience for patients, while ensuring communication remains seamless throughout treatment.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis often means taking in a lot of information over a short period of time. It's completely normal to leave an appointment only to think of more questions later.

Writing down your questions beforehand, bringing a family member or friend for support, and taking notes during your consultation can all help you feel more informed and at ease.

Your care team is there to guide you through each step, and no question is too small when it comes to understanding your diagnosis, treatment options and what to expect along the way.

August is Stomach Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to increase understanding of a cancer that can be difficult to recognise in its early stages.

Organisations such as the Gut Cancer Foundation play an important role in raising awareness, funding research and advocating for New Zealanders affected by gastrointestinal cancers.

Throughout August, we encourage people to learn the possible signs of stomach cancer and speak with their GP if they experience persistent or unexplained digestive symptoms.

Daffodil Day is coming up on Friday 28 August, and it's the Cancer Society's biggest fundraising event of the year.

Funds raised help provide vital support services for people affected by cancer, while also contributing to cancer research and education across New Zealand. Whether you're planning a workplace fundraiser, organising a school activity or making a personal donation, every contribution helps make a difference.

Visit daffodilday.org.nz to find ideas, register your fundraiser or learn how you can get involved.

Cancer treatment is about far more than appointments and technology.

The people patients interact with and the environment they spend time in can have a significant impact on how supported they feel throughout their care journey.

Our St George's Cancer Centre team works together to create an experience that feels calm, welcoming, and reassuring from the moment patients arrive. Combining experienced clinical care with compassion and thoughtful support remains an important part of how we care for patients and their families.
