The Matariki Practice - Alison Donley: Structural Naturopath

The Matariki Practice - Alison Donley: Structural Naturopath Alison Donley is a New Zealand based, fully UK-trained Osteopath and Naturopath Many mothers view her as their ‘Baby Whisperer’!

Friday and Saturday - Dunsandel
Tuesday and Wednesday - Community House, Ashburton

Alison enjoys successfully treating people of all ages and sizes but feels it is important that women and babies especially have their problems heard. She can help with pre-conceptual preparation and fertility issues as well as helping common pregnancy complaints such as sciatica, low back aches, pubic symphysis pain and headaches that women often think they have to put up with. Once baby is born both mother and baby can be rebalanced as well as assisted with such problems as infant colic, reflux, poor sleep and general baby discomfort. Working as a Structural Naturopath in NZ, Alison successfully uses a variety of gentle cranial, structural, homeopathic and herbal techniques/remedies. Alison graduated in 1996 from the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy (London,UK) and had 2 busy practices in Warwickshire before immigrating to New Zealand 15 years ago. Alison and her Osteopath husband both practice from their home based clinic in Dunsandel, just outside Christchurch. Alison has experienced the highs and lows of parenting with her two children so there is little she hasn’t seen before. There is a play corner in the room for children while mum or baby is having treatment, as well as lots of space to run around outside. Goats, sheep and horses can be spotted in the paddocks and there are often hens and ducks pecking around. A visit to The Matariki Practice is geared to being as stress-free as possible so the whole family can get back to the serious process of enjoying themselves...

If you have a snuggly baby who likes to be held and that works for you, it's okay to have that time with them.

“I think something is wrong with my baby. He never wants to be put down.”

A new mother said this to me recently, exhausted and worried. She had read about independent sleep, baby containers, and all the things babies were “supposed” to do. But her baby had other plans.

He wanted to be held.

All. The. Time.

The truth is, nothing was wrong with her baby.

For nine months, her baby lived in a warm, dark environment where he was constantly held, constantly fed, and could hear his mother’s heartbeat with every moment. Then suddenly he entered a bright, noisy world full of unfamiliar sensations.

Of course he wanted to be close.

Human babies are designed to seek connection. They don’t just need milk. They need touch, warmth, movement, familiar voices, and the reassurance that their caregiver is near. Being held helps regulate their temperature, heart rate, breathing, stress hormones, and emotions.

Wanting to be carried isn’t a bad habit.
Wanting contact isn’t being spoiled.
Wanting you isn’t a problem to fix.

In fact, it’s exactly what we would expect from a healthy newborn.

One day, your baby will crawl away, walk away, and eventually run ahead without looking back. But in these early weeks and months, their favorite place in the entire world is in your arms.

So if your baby only naps on you, wants to nurse constantly, or protests the moment you set them down, take a deep breath.

You don’t have a broken baby.

You have a baby being a baby.

And one day you’ll look back and realize that what felt so overwhelming was also a season of incredible trust, connection, and love.

Never feel like you are not enough. Often babies who are struggling with feeding are still having issues from birth. And I can help with that! 🥰
