Father’s Day brings different feelings for everyone in our community.

While it is a day of celebration for many, for those who have lost a dad, grandad, or father figure, it can be a day of quiet remembrance. The absence of someone who helped shape your life is often felt a little more deeply on days like this.

You might find comfort in traditions today - listening to his favourite music, taking a walk in a place he loved around Canterbury, or sharing stories with family. Or you might prefer to keep the day low-key and quiet.

Whatever Father’s Day looks like for you this year, there is no pressure to mark it in any specific way. Give yourself permission to pause, reflect, and hold onto the memories that mean the most.

Our thoughts are with all of you remembering a father figure today.

Some resting places carry a very special kind of quiet.
Recently, Jamie was at Duvauchelle Cemetery on Banks Peninsula for a burial. Framed by green hills and established trees, it is hard not to appreciate how serene a location like this is for a final farewell.
For many families we walk alongside, finding a place that feels deeply connected to nature or personal history brings a real sense of comfort and resolution. Canterbury is fortunate to have many quiet, historic, and beautiful spaces - from peninsula bays to peaceful local churchyards.

There is never any rush when deciding what path feels right for your family.

Taking the time to explore options, ask questions, and reflect on what your loved one would have wanted makes all the difference.

If you would like to know more about cemetery options across Christchurch and the wider Canterbury area, our team is always here for a quiet chat.

Dear Team Simplicity

I have the weirdest of feelings. The little menace had a great day, being his annoying self and not leaving me be for a single second. Wherever I went, there he was. I changed rooms, he changed rooms.
You know the sort, right? Finally mum took pity on me and put him in the sun room with the door closed.
Apparently he just curled up and fell asleep within seconds. And me? I found myself a cosy spot for a nap. I was just about to doze 💤💤 of when I realised that I almost (ALMOST!) missed the guy. I can’t believe it.
Do I have to change my opinion? I’ll reserve judgement on that.

Love, Belle ❤️🐾❤️

What does an "unattended cremation" actually mean?

It is a choice some families make when they prefer not to have a formal service or gathering at the crematorium itself. However, unattended never means uncared for.
When facilitating an unattended cremation, a member of our team personally transports your loved one to either Canterbury Crematorium or Harewood Crematorium here in Christchurch. We physically sign them over into the hands of the cremator technician at their booked time, making sure they are delivered safely and with absolute dignity.

DID YOU KNOW that before a cremation can take place? In New Zealand, every single cremation must be reviewed by a Medical Referee.

Unlike a burial, cremation is irreversible. The Medical Referee is an independent doctor whose legal role is to independently examine all medical paperwork prior to the cremation. This step ensures the cause of death has been thoroughly verified, giving families complete peace of mind that every check has been properly completed.

Whether you are considering direct cremation or looking into traditional options across Christchurch, having clear, straightforward information helps you make the choices that feel right.

If you have questions about any part of the process, our team is always here for a gentle, pressure-free chat.

Spring is quietly making its way through Sydenham Cemetery.
Walking through the grounds earlier this week, the bright yellow daffodils scattered among the headstones felt like a gentle reminder of continuity and quiet hope. Even in places marked by memory and loss, new life always finds its way back.
Sydenham Cemetery has held the stories of local Christchurch families for generations. Taking a slow walk here under a clear blue sky offers a peaceful space to reflect, remember, or simply take in the changing season.

Have you noticed the early signs of spring around your neighbourhood this week?

Dear Team Simplicity 🐾

The sad days continue, and the little menace 🐈 is now allowed to leave the crate almost whenever he wants to. And I just have to live with it. He’s so quiet… not like puppies you can hear from a mile away. This guy though is like a little ninja.
You just stand there, not thinking about anything in particular, and BAM, there he is right next to you. Thank goodness he doesn’t want to play with me. And at least for now if I ignore him long enough he goes away, and maybe if I play the grump he will remain scared of me. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Love, Belle 🐾❤️🐈

As Nina and Renee left work last night, the sky was absolutely beautiful! Who else remembers the old saying, "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight"? 🌅

I'm also starting to notice daffodils popping up around town—does this mean spring is finally on the way? 🌼

Saturday afternoon, this was the view.
Not everyone pictures a racetrack when they think about gathering people together — but that's the point.
Your way. Always.

What you don't see......
Before a casket ever reaches the chapel or the viewing, it looks like this. Screwdrivers, drills, handles laid out on the bench, someone fitting the linings just right.

There's a quiet kind of care in this part. No one's watching. No one will ever know how carefully the corners were finished, or how many times we checked the fit before it was right. We do it anyway, because the family will only see the finished version, and it needs to be perfect for them, even if they never know what went into it.

This is the part of the job nobody really thinks about. The hands-on, unglamorous, get-it-right-because-it-matters part.

What would you want to know about what happens behind the scenes?
