COUPLES THERAPY - What Happens in Couples Therapy?
At Calm & Co. Counselling Services, couples therapy isn't just about talking through underlying issues in your relationship. Each person brings their own unique life experiences into a relationship, for example, different childhood role models of healthy/toxic relationships; different conflict resolution styles; different attachment styles, and negative thought patterns. In couples counselling, we explore why particular issues or conflict cycles keep occurring, and take positive action.
The first step is to identify where on the relationship cycle you are sitting - is the relationship in an 'adaptation' stage, a 'deterioration' stage, or a 'repair/ 'termination' stage? We identify communication styles during conflict - is conflict resolved, and if not, what is it about each person's conflict resolution style that may be creating more challenges to overcoming issues in a positive way? One partner may withdraw from the conflict and not communicate, while the other wants to communicate and resolve conflict straight away. Either way, both partners are left to ruminate about current and past conflicts, and continue a repetitive cycle. Understanding attachment styles can also highlight individual differences in why we may not feel secure in our relationship. And - it's an individual choice - we can look further into how childhood family relationships have influenced the way you communicate with your partner and manage conflict in your relationship.
I offer a safe space for couples to work through any challenges they face. While most sessions are together, some individual sessions may also be beneficial. Couples Therapy has the same fee as individual therapy sessions, there is no additional charge ($130 per 60-minute session).
