Kia ora, I'm Nic (she/her), a Registered Counsellor based in Christchurch, New Zealand. I specialize in supporting people like you recover from disordered eating, ditch diet culture and reclaim their life and their vibrancy. My journey as a Therapist stems from my own recovery from Binge Eating Disorder and years of navigating body image struggles. I've overcome the entanglements of diet culture, body dissatisfaction, anxiety, and depression. I've also experienced life in a body of every shape and size; I know what it's like to feel invisible. To feel that my weight dictated my worth and how much love I deserved. My quest for happiness and belonging led me to choose weight loss surgery, and when I achieved my dream body, I discovered that it didn't bring the peace and joy I sought. That's when I realised that there was more work to be done and I embarked on the journey of healing my body image, and my relationship with food and eating. These personal experiences, combined with the challenges of finding support during my own struggles, motivate my therapeutic approach. In our sessions, I integrate evidence-based psychotherapy modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy-Enhanced, Mindfulness-Based Therapy, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. Embracing an Anti-Diet, Health at Every Size philosophy, my aim is to cultivate a secure and non-judgmental space for your self-exploration and positive transformation. Alongside my specialized focus on body image and eating issues, I also work with a range of other mental health concerns including anxiety and depression.

Welcome to Binge Free Bestie. If you’re new here, this is the place to start. I’m Nic, a registered counsellor in New Zealand, recovered binge eater (binge-free since 2019), and founder of Binge Free Bestie.

For years, diet culture convinced us that losing control around food was a personal willpower failure. We restarted every Monday, blamed ourselves, and tried harder.

Inside The Food Freedom Method, binge and emotional eating come down to three triggers we were never taught to recognize:

Physical restriction: skipping meals, undereating during the day, or trying to survive on willpower until biology takes over.

Mental restriction: living with rigid food rules, guilt, and labelling foods as ā€œbadā€ or ā€œoff limitsā€, which creates constant scarcity.

An overwhelmed nervous system: turning to food when stressed, exhausted, or overwhelmed because food was the fastest way we found to feel comforted.

You were never broken. We were handed rules that taught us to distrust our own bodies.

We grew up watching women restart every Monday like clockwork. New plan, new rules, new promise that this time would be different.

Nobody talks about the car park negotiations. The forty false starts. The quiet shame of trying again when the last attempt ended three days in.

We were sold a system designed to fail us and then blamed ourselves every single time we couldn’t sustain it. Diet culture handed us the rules, collected the money, and left us sitting in the wreckage wondering what was wrong with us.

Nothing was wrong with you. The game was rigged before you even started.

Every single time you got back up, even when nobody saw it, even when you didn’t tell a soul, that was the bravest version of you showing up.

I spent $20,000 having 80% of my stomach removed to try and stop binge eating.

We spent decades believing our appetite was a flaw that needed surgery or starvation to fix. We drank chalky SlimFast cans in 2004, followed every rigid rule the wellness industry handed down, and blamed ourselves when physical restriction made our bodies demand food.

Your body or your appetite was never the problem. You were handed rules that taught you to distrust yourself.

We spend our entire day answering to everyone else, managing obligations, and carrying the mental load for an entire household.

By the time the kitchen lights are dimmed, standing in front of the open cupboard is often the only uncomplicated moment on the schedule.

Our generation grew up in the low-rise jeans era, taught that our hunger had to be audited and shrunk. Diet culture handed us rules, and the modern wellness industry just repackaged them with cleaner fonts and more guilt.

When an entire day is measured and ruled by outside demands, our biology looks for comfort in the simplest place available. A biscuit never asks for an explanation or an apology.

We spent decades believing that reaching into the pantry at the end of an exhausting day meant we lacked discipline. Childhood conditioning taught us to ignore our own exhaustion until food became the only permission we had to rest.

Your body or your appetite was never the problem. You were handed rules that taught you to distrust your own hunger.

You just needed a life where peace did not have to hide in a kitchen cupboard.

This is what happens when women stop trying to do recovery perfectly and start doing it honestly.

Every week inside The Break Up, our besties jump on hot seat calls and bring whatever they’re carrying. No scripts. No pretending they’ve got it figured out.

This week, one bestie came on at a 7 out of 10 after giving herself permission to just eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks without agonising over whether every meal was optimised. Another shared that she caught herself mid-urge, paused, and asked what she actually needed before reaching for food.

That pause is everything.

We talked about Spoon Theory, the idea that some days you wake up with 10 spoons of energy and some days you get 6. Recovery isn’t about doing it all. It’s about asking what’s good enough with what I have today.

When you’re down to your last two spoons at the end of the day, something from the freezer, a hot shower, and bed IS the win.

This is what we do. Real conversations. Real tools. Real women figuring it out together.

We were raised to walk past mirrors quickly. To suck in before we sat down. To apologise for taking up space in a photo.

Thirty years of that rewiring doesn’t undo itself in a single moment. But one moment of standing still, looking down at your body, and saying thank you instead of sorry? That is where it starts.

We were handed rules about our bodies before we could even spell the word diet. None of those rules belonged to us.

Your body carried you through every single one of those years. It never once stopped showing up for you, even when you couldn’t show up for it.

Comment EMBRACE and I will send you the link for my body image workbook (or head to bio), it’s a beautiful guide to body acceptance, filled with my favourite mindset shifts and therapist-backed strategies to find body peace šŸ’œ
