The question we're asked most before someone buys an ozone therapy bundle: do I need an oxygen tank or a concentrator?

Short version. A tank gives you high-purity oxygen for a smaller upfront cost, but you need a local supplier to refill it and a regulator to control the flow. A concentrator like the OXY-96 makes 96% oxygen from room air at the flick of a switch - more upfront, nothing to refill, and no dependence on a gas supplier, which matters if you're rural.

Spring planting is under way, and hygiene is the unglamorous half of a healthy garden - the half ozonated water was made for.

Wipe secateurs between plants. Rinse pots and seed trays before they go back into service. Spray-and-wipe the glasshouse bench, the chook waterer and the compost caddy. Rinse the harvest. One spray bottle, tap water, nothing to buy again.

A bonus one customer told us about: ants. Ants follow scent trails, and wiping the trail away is standard pest advice - ozonated water cleans up the organic compounds those trails are made of. She uses hers on the bench for exactly that.

And the question we get asked most - does ozone do anything about pests? Yes, but it's ozone gas, not the spray. Grain stores use it against weevils and their eggs in sealed silos; there's lab work on mites and bed bugs too. A spray bottle can't reach those doses (and a living plant couldn't survive them), so for weevils in stored beans or mites in stored garlic it's a generator into a sealed bin, and for an empty shed or glasshouse between crops it's the PURIMAX room ozonator - talk to us before you try either.

Spring cleaning season on both sides of the Tasman - and a good moment to rethink what's under the sink.

The Microbe Mister 2.0 makes ozonated water from ordinary tap water, in the bottle, as you spray. No cartridges, no refills, no fragrance. Wet the surface, leave it visibly wet for about 30 seconds, then wipe. Benches, chopping boards, high chairs, the toilet seat, fridge shelves - and greasy ones too: ozone breaks down the fats in everyday food films, so the wipe takes them off with it. (Baked-on grease is still a job for a degreaser.)

Ever noticed that fresh, clean smell after a thunderstorm? That's ozone - O3 - made when lightning splits oxygen molecules and they regroup in threes.

That third atom is what makes ozone so useful. It's unstable, so it reacts readily with whatever it meets, then reverts to ordinary oxygen. Nothing is left behind - which is why water treatment plants, food processors and hotels have used it for decades.
