Christchurch parents, if you’re after playgrounds to hang with the kids that involve a nice natural feeling vibe, offers multiple other ways to connect and explore, and has more nearby then this is a cool spot to check out.

The toilets are often in average condition FYI

Another thing to be aware of when exploring the surrounding redzone with little kids (fruit trees, pop up pump track etc) are plenty of people walking their dogs which are sometime off lead.

Navigation training with Chris McGimpsey from the Christchurch Tramping Club last weekend - Chris took us to the winter wonderland of Mt Thomas, taught us some helpful stuff to help us find our way off track and let us have some minor oops! Moments that we’d (hopefully) remember not to do again when we’re finding our way in the bush….

How confident would you be finding your way home if you found yourself lost on a tramping trip?

Taking kids tramping/hiking in the wilderness also instantly turns you into the trip leader of some pretty precious little humans and these training days will help me more confidently take them on more and more backcountry trips to experience more of our beautiful country.

The choice of trail for family trips, I think, often comes down to the parents’ own experience and safety skills/knowledge and it’s so important to choose something within your zone of competence. Here’s me beginning to widen my zone!

Up-skilling in hobbies I love has also been part of my self-care as a mum of young kids lately, suddenly finding myself with a little more freedom than before.

Family-friendly tramping/hiking trip at top of the South Island for the outdoor loving parents in Nelson Tasman or travelling from somewhere else - share with your mates and start planning that trip!

This one is accessible for beginners even in winter as it is close to sea level/not an alpine environment getting snow and ice.

6km each way up and over a hill approx 300m elevation gain (manageable)

You have the beach 5 mins walk away, additional short walks, fishing, lots of weka, gather wood and make a campfire in the allotted space, plenty of grassy space and forest to play.

Whariwharangi Hut winter tramping overnight trip with the kids and some whānau! Hut tour reel coming soon 👀 share with the people you’d do this one with.

It is at the northern end of the Abel Tasman most easily accessed by driving over to the carpark at Wainui Bay.

There were nerves from the kids about heading to sleep in a hut in winter but they were sweet (oldest has done it before but wouldn’t remember). Now they know they can do it! 💪

4wd tracks can get a bit boring for kids to walk on since it’s minimal challenge but between the weka, piwakawaka, teeny tiny mushrooms, eye spy, lolly breaks every 1km, borrowing nanny janny’s walking poles (and making their own) and “sling shots” they were all good!

Once you’re there the hut is a cool base to hang out, the beach is a five minute walk down a track, and there is plenty to do!

Also a great place to camp in a tent with kids, the campsite near the hut has a fire pit which we used to toast some marshmallows.

A wander down to the beach for sunrise was a treat (even though the sun was a little shy hiding behind the hill)

It was about time I took the kids overnight tramping again. Our last trip with kids being a couple of months ago to Woolshed Creek Hut (Canterbury), feet were getting itchy.

So off we went 6kms in 6kms out to this gorgeous old homestead that is now a DOC hut at the northern end of Abel Tasman. Tacked on to a trip to see family, we were lucky to have Nanny Janny and Aunty Sofie along for the trip which made it even better (and more hands is fab 👌).

Whariwharangi Hut is most easily accessed by car from Wainui Bay in Golden Bay. The great thing for families with small children is that there are four seperate rooms, giving you a chance to nab a room to yourselves if possible on arrival. Top tip - there’s a 4 bed room at the top of the stairs to the right which we managed to have to ourselves. This has one platform sort of bed that you could squeeze a number of small kids into with you as the mattresses are just side by side. It also has a single bed. Shout out of you have any questions about the hut or walk while it’s fresh in my mind!

You walk up and over a hill - about 3kms up and3kms down - on an easy 4wd track. This makes it super achievable, but note that 4wd tracks can be a little boring for little ones as there’s no technical challenge. All in all I reckon it’s a great beginner overnight hike with little kids. It’s would be hot on the uphill on day one in Summer, as that side is exposed.

A new ish play space perfect for getting the kids outside these school holidays! Have you checked it out yet?

There’s magic in the playground AND in the surrounding outdoor spaces - check out the rocks and rock pools, or some of the nearby walking trails along the bays. You could make a whole day out of it as you can walk from naval point right around to magazine, corsair and Cass bays and beyond! There’s a fishing space further down towards the port.

Plating native trees is a great conservation activity with kids and something they can watch grow over time!

We hope it’ll attract more native birds to our backyard that we can admire together too.

Free hiking meet-ups in Christchurch for parents/caregivers with pēpi & tamariki age 6 and under!

This is our most recent meet-up last week at Sign of the Bellbird - we walked the 1.6km Tōtara Trail which is so lovely, full of native bird life like piwakawaka, korimako & kererū. There are longer loops walks here too, for longer adventures - well worth a visit.

Our next one is at Pūtaringamotu / Riccarton Bush for a nice cruisy final term 2 walk with shared kai.
