Christchurch Therapeutic Massage Centre

Christchurch Therapeutic Massage Centre CTMC is a therapeutic massage clinic in central Christchurch.

We have seven therapists who have various specialities but our overarching and most requested modality is deep tissue massage.

🚨 STOP DOING HAMSTRING STRETCHES AND PIGEON POSE IF YOU HAVE ELECTRIC SHOOTING PAIN DOWN THE BACK OF YOUR LEG, NUMBNESS IN THE PINKY TOE, AND A DEEP GLUTEAL ACHE THAT NEVER DIES! 🚨 You are actively strangling your sciatic nerve, shearing your sacroiliac joint, and grinding your Modic endplates into inflammatory bone marrow lesions every single time you stretch that “tight” hamstring.

[The Engineering Breakdown]: Normal biomechanics require the sciatic nerve to slide freely through the deep gluteal space between the piriformis muscle and the gemelli-obturator complex. The lumbar spine maintains a lordotic curve, the sacrum nutates and counternutates with a glide of only 2–4 mm, and the hip joint centers the femoral head in the acetabulum. When the pelvis falls into anterior torsion and the femur internally rotates, the piriformis becomes a compressive vice. Simultaneously, the posterior annulus of L4-L5 and L5-S1 takes on shear load that the glute max and core failed to absorb. The vertebral endplates respond to this chronic shear by developing Modic type 1 and type 2 changes — micro-fractures, edema, and fatty marrow replacement that show up on MRI and get falsely blamed on a disc bulge.

[The Mechanical Failure]:

The Constant Stretch: Your “tight hamstring” is actually the sciatic nerve being tethered and tensioned. Stretching it creates neurodynamic tension, pulling the nerve into the piriformis entrapment zone and increasing intraneural pressure. Every stretch deepens the neural ischemia and worsens the electric shocks.

The Bone Shear: Anterior sacral shear and femoral internal rotation transfer ground reaction force directly into the sacroiliac joint and the L5-S1 disc. The endplates take the brunt, developing Modic changes that are mechanical overload lesions — not infection, not “degeneration.”

The Friction Zone: The deep gluteal space becomes a friction chamber where the sciatic nerve rubs against the piriformis tendon and the ischial tuberosity. The blinding red hotspot in our render is exactly where the nerve is being strangulated and the endplate is being crushed.

[Why Conventional Treatment Is Destroying You]: The MRI says “disc bulge” or “degenerative disc disease,” so you get sent to massage, hamstring stretching, and even Orthopedic Surgery. The massage therapist digs into the piriformis, inflaming the nerve further. The chiropractor yanks the pelvis, increasing sacral shear. The doctor injects Cortisone into the epidural space or the piriformis, which masks the pain for six weeks while the mechanical crush continues unabated. Then the surgeon offers a microdiscectomy or fusion — cutting out disc material that was never the true generator, while the Modic endplate failure and deep gluteal entrapment remain untouched. Premium Health Insurance plans are now paying for high-cost MRIs, injections, and surgical consults that miss the biomechanical truth. Specialized Biomechanical Mapping and force-vector analysis can identify the exact shear and compression zones before you consent to any irreversible procedure.

[The 3-Step Mechanical Fix]:

Step 1 (Decompression): 90/90 hip lift with a neutral spine and externally rotated femur to open the deep gluteal space and reduce sciatic nerve tension. Hold 3 minutes, breathing into the pelvic floor, no stretching.

Step 2 (Isometric Sealing): Isometric piriformis and glute medius activation in 30-degree hip abduction against a wall, 10-second holds x 10 reps, to restore neurovascular sliding and stabilize the sacroiliac joint.

Step 3 (Centration/Rebuilding): Loaded glute max centration via banded hip thrusts and single-leg stance with core canister bracing, progressively building to 20 reps, to stop the pelvic torsion and offload the Modic endplates.

After an intense workout, muscle fibers go through a natural recovery process. During the first 24 hours, tiny tears trigger inflammation as the body begins clearing damaged tissue. Between 24 and 48 hours, repair cells rebuild the muscle fibers, making them stronger. By 48 to 72 hours, recovery is largely complete, with repaired tissue better prepared to handle future physical stress and exercise.
