Over the past couple of years,, I had the privilege of sharing my breast cancer journey at Pink Ribbon events.

Somewhere along the way, what began as diagnosis and treatment unexpectedly became purpose — helping bring these specially designed backpacks to Aotearoa through Altered Freedom.

Recovery can change your relationship with your body, movement, confidence, and even simple things like carrying a bag comfortably.

Events like these feel especially meaningful because we know firsthand how important the support of can be during a breast cancer journey.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported Breast Cancer Foundation NZ throughout Pink Ribbon Month. Your generosity helps fund vital research, education, and support for those affected by breast cancer across Aotearoa.

Messages like this mean so much.

A recent customer purchased one of our backpacks to support a shoulder injury, then put it to the test on the Tongariro Crossing.

Afterwards, she sent this message:

"Loved the backpack - very comfortable, and the waterproof cover came in very handy. Would highly recommend."

Seeing our backpacks support people to keep doing the things they love — whether navigating recovery, rebuilding strength, or simply getting back outdoors — is exactly why Altered Freedom exists.

The last day of autumn brought one of those classic Canterbury contradictions — a warm nor’wester with just enough chill to remind us the seasons are shifting. 🍂

With our last long weekend for a while, it was the perfect chance to get outside with my mokopuna and enjoy the simple gift of time in nature.

There’s something about being outdoors that helps us reset — space to breathe, reflect, and find balance again.

Sometimes freedom is found in grand adventures.
Sometimes it’s in the quieter moments: moving with ease and being fully present.

That’s why the WomansBack was created — to support freedom of movement, so these simple moments can be fully embraced.

Not everyone who gets breast cancer has a family history.

I carry the BRCA2 and PALB2 faulty genes, but many people are diagnosed with no known genetic link at all.
Please listen to your body.
Go to your appointments.

Advocate for yourself if something feels wrong.
Early detection, awareness, and education can change lives. 🤍

As a survivor, these conversations are deeply personal to me. They are also part of why Kathryn and I created Altered Freedom — to support people navigating recovery, treatment, and life after diagnosis.

My mum has always been by my side, right from the very beginning of my life. 🤍
And through some of the hardest moments I’ve faced — diagnosis, treatment, and everything in between — she never stopped showing up with love, strength, patience, and support when I needed it most.

I know this journey was not only hard for me, but for her too. Watching someone you love go through so much while trying to stay strong for them is a kind
of pain many mothers quietly carry.

Even today, she is still here. Supporting me, encouraging me, and loving me through every stage of life.

This Mother’s Day, I just want to say thank you Mum. I’m forever grateful for everything you’ve carried with me. 🤍

And to all the mums — the ones holding it all together, fighting their own battles, grieving, healing, loving, and showing up every day — we see you and we celebrate you. Your love and strength never go unnoticed. 🤍

And for those missing their mums today, we’re holding you close in our thoughts too. 🤍

A Christmas Eve toast to you.

To our customers, supporters, health professionals, friends, and everyone who has quietly encouraged us along the way — thank you. Truly.
