A recent study of our Mobile Lithotripsy Unit has demonstrated exceptional outcomes in the treatment of challenging lower ureteric stones located at the vesico ureteric junction (VUJ) using extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Between 2019 and 2025, complete stone clearance was achieved in 31 out of 37 patients (83.8%), an impressive success rate for what is traditionally considered a difficult-to-treat group.

A huge shout out to our dedicated Mobile Medical team member, James Hayes, who was a finalist for the 2026 2degrees New Zealand Innovator of the Year – Te Pou Toko o te Tau. James is a radiographer onboard our mobile lithotripsy unit, and represented Virtual Medical Coaching as a finalist. He was recognised for transforming medical imaging education through innovation and compassion.

It’s an outstanding achievement, and we’re incredibly proud of him! Congratulations, James!

Whangārei-based nurse Andrea Nixon was named the 2025 recipient of the Maggie Burn Scholarship.

Sponsored by Mobile Medical and awarded by the New Zealand Urological Nurses Society (NZUNS), the scholarship supported Andrea’s recent trip to Edinburgh, where she helped launch EFUNCore – a global Core Educational Framework for Urology Nursing.

Andrea shared her appreciation with us, reflecting on what the opportunity meant for her: “I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your wonderful support in awarding me the Maggie Burn Scholarship, which assisted my attendance at the BAUN Conference in Edinburgh. It meant so much to be there for the launch of the EFUN Core - it really was a privilege to be part of the project and will be a highlight in my nursing career. The conference was great! I love meeting other passionate urology nurses and hearing the amazing things that they are doing!”

Celebrating 30 Years of Mobile Medical

Since 1995, Mobile Medical has revolutionised how New Zealanders access kidney stone treatment. This year, we proudly mark three decades of delivering expert urological care to communities across Aotearoa.

It all began with a bold idea. Urologists Dr Stu Gowland and Dr Jon Cadwallader identified a major barrier in kidney stone treatment: lithotripsy - a non-invasive procedure using focused shockwaves to break up stones required costly, specialised equipment. For many regions, investing in a standalone machine was simply not feasible.

Their solution was visionary: a mobile lithotripsy unit that could travel the country, bringing advanced care directly to patients.

The evening was filled with joy and nostalgia as colleagues and friends came together to honour his remarkable contributions. There were heartfelt speeches from guest speakers who shared memorable anecdotes and praised his visionary leadership. Jon was presented with a pounamu mere and a crystal award to recognise his dedication and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. It was a fitting tribute to an individual who has touched the lives of many and whose influence will continue to inspire us all. We wish Jon all the best in his well-deserved retirement!
