Is Pilates just stretching?” 👀

I get this a lot. And honestly, I’m here to change your mind.

Pilates is strength. Full stop.

Here’s what we’re actually doing in a session:

We load muscles eccentrically, meaning we work them as they lengthen. This is one of the most injury-protective things you can do for your body, and it’s massively underrated in most training programmes.

We fire up the small stabilising muscles, the ones that get sleepy and switch off after injury, pregnancy, or just… life. These are the muscles that keep your joints safe and your movement efficient. No other training modality targets them quite like this.

And yes, we use weights. Reformer springs aren’t decoration. We’re loading, we’re resisting, we’re building real capacity.

Pilates is strength through length. It’s not a gentle stretch class. It’s rehabilitation, injury prevention, and performance, all in one.

So if you’ve been curious, or if someone told you Pilates was “just for flexibility”, come try a session and find out for yourself. 🙋‍♀️

Sunday mornings don’t get much better than this ☀️

Movement, connection, incredible food from and a well-earned glass of bubbles to finish 🥂 This is what Pilates and Brunch at Domaine Thomson feels like.

Our winter edition was such a special one. Watching this community show up on a beautiful morning, warm energy genuinely fills my cup every single time 🤍

If you missed it, watch this space. We’ll be doing it again 👀

Left Ireland, followed love, landed in the most ridiculously beautiful place on earth. 🏔️

When I moved to Central Otago, I knew I wanted to build something that was genuinely mine so I turned my home studio into a space where real people could get real results.

Not a big clinic. Not a franchise. Just a physio and Pilates instructor who actually gives a damn about getting you back to the trails, the slopes, the Saturday morning run, the thing that makes you you.

That’s why Move With Us exists. Because life’s too short to sit on the sidelines of it.

If you’re recovering, rebuilding, or just trying to keep up with everything this place demands of your body, I’m here for it. 💪

A reformer flow that challenges strength, balance, mobility and core control all in one sequence.

Starting with sideways scooter work to fire up the glutes, progressing through side lunges and pulses before moving into side plank variations and finishing with full pikes.

Every exercise builds on the one before it, creating a challenging but seamless flow that works the whole body.

Which move would challenge you the most? 👇

Move your body. Warm your soul. ☁️

We’re hosting a special winter Pilates + Brunch at the beautiful Domaine Thomson Winery on Sunday 7 June and the menu from The Kitchen Garden is something else.

Think loaded porridge stations, ricotta feta pumpkin bites, mini smoked salmon bagels, and banana maple waffles with cinnamon butter. All after a nourishing Pilates class for all levels.

This is the kind of Sunday morning that fills your cup right up. 🤍

Single leg rehab isn’t about jumping straight into the hardest exercise 👣

It’s about building step by step.

We often start with static lunges to build control and confidence, progress into walking lunges to challenge balance and coordination, then load further with split squats for strength and stability 💪

Your body adapts after injury and unilateral work helps expose weaknesses, improve control and rebuild trust in movement.

Progressive rehab > rushing the process 🔥

Double leg strength work is often the starting point in rehab 👏
It helps rebuild overall strength, confidence and tolerance after injury.

But as you progress… it’s important to move into single leg work too 👀

Why? Because your body adapts after injury.
One side often compensates while the other loses strength, stability and control.

The challenge with double leg exercises is that compensation can stay hidden.

Single leg work exposes those deficits so you can properly rebuild:
✔️ strength
✔️ balance
✔️ control
✔️ stability
✔️ confidence

This is often the missing link between “feeling okay” and truly returning to running, sport or everyday movement stronger 💪

Don’t skip the transition from double → single leg work 🙌

We had the most beautiful summer Pilates events in the garden at Kitchen Garden ☀️🌿
Fresh air, sunshine, movement and the best community energy.

But as the seasons change… it’s time to head inside 🤍

Our Winter Pilates Event is moving into a cosy venue with warm studio vibes, nourishing winter food, and even a wine to warm you up afterwards if you fancy 🍷

📍 June 7th — Domaine Thomson Wines

Think slow strengthening movement, connection, and the perfect mid-winter reset.

Spots will be limited so we can keep the group small and special ✨

Watch closely 👀
In the squat, the body naturally shifts weight to the uninjured side.

It’s not weakness.
It’s survival.

Your body will ALWAYS find a way to get the job done, even if one side does all the work.

That’s why single-leg and single-arm work is such a big part of rehab.
It reveals the deficits we can’t see in bilateral exercises.

And once we see them… we can fix them 💪
