Celebrating Our HCAs | Meet Sylvester “Bubbles” Baldevieso
This HCA Day, we’re proud to recognise Sylvester “Bubbles” Baldevieso from Eltham Care, whose nominations tell a consistent story of an HCA who genuinely lives our Sound Care values every day.
Sylvester is highly regarded by residents, families and colleagues for his kindness, compassion, patience and positive attitude. Whether working in Memory Care or the Rest Home/Hospital wing, he brings the same level of care, professionalism and respect to everyone around him.
A particularly special part of Sylvester’s approach is the way he encourages our residents to maintain their independence. He takes residents for walks, encourages them to do what they can for themselves, and provides support when needed, helping residents remain active, involved and confident.
His commitment to caring for and serving others extends well beyond his role at Eltham Care. Before coming to New Zealand, Sylvester was a Registered Nurse in the Philippines and worked as a Staff Nurse in a hospital setting. Prior to returning to nursing, he also spent more than 13 years serving as a Police Officer with the Philippine National Police, receiving numerous commendations and service awards throughout his career.
That varied background has given Sylvester a wealth of experience, but it is the way he applies it, with humility, empathy and a willingness to help, that his colleagues and residents appreciate most.
At Eltham Care, he is known as someone who simply gets things done. From supporting colleagues and helping new staff to assisting with resident appointments or urgent pharmacy collections, Sylvester is always willing to step in when something needs doing.
He also makes time for people. He has a listening ear when residents or colleagues need to talk, warmly welcomes visiting families, and somehow manages to do it all with a smile.
As one of his nominations beautifully summed it up:

Sylvester or Bubbles, as he is affectionately known, thank you for bringing your years of experience, compassion and commitment to our residents and team at Eltham Care. Most importantly, thank you for continuing to choose a career centred around caring for and serving others.
