Amblyopia (or “lazy eye”) can affect how your child sees the world.

The good news? When it’s picked up early—ideally before the age of 7—it’s often very treatable.

Treatment might include glasses, patching, or simple vision therapy, all designed to help both eyes work together as they should.

Early detection really does make all the difference.

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision—or it’s been a while since their last check—book an eye exam with your local Paterson Burn Optometrist today.

What is Amblyopia? Often referred to as ‘lazy eye’, amblyopia is a condition that affects around 155,000 New Zealanders. It occurs when the connection between the eye and the brain doesn’t develop as it should, commonly due to an uncorrected prescription or eye turn in childhood.

Over time, this can lead to reduced vision in one (or sometimes both) eyes, even into adulthood.

Because children may not realise their vision isn’t clear — and the condition can affect just one eye — amblyopia can easily go unnoticed without a comprehensive eye check.

Early detection makes all the difference.

Give your child the best start by booking a thorough eye examination with your local Paterson Burn optometrist. To book now, click the link in our bio to find the nearest practice to you.

The Amsler Grid is a simple at-home tool used to monitor changes in your central vision, which can be affected by conditions such as macular degeneration and epiretinal membrane.

To carry out the Amsler Grid test at home:
- Hold the grid about 30cm from your face while wearing your reading glasses.
- Cover your left eye and focus on the central dot with your right eye.
- Keep your gaze fixed on the dot—don’t look away.
- Repeat with your left eye.

If any lines appear wavy, distorted, blurred, or missing, contact your optometrist or eye specialist promptly, as this may indicate changes in the macula.

At Paterson Burn, we use advanced imaging such as OCT to detect early changes at the macula and support ongoing care. If you've noticed any changes in your vision, book in for an eye test with us today https://www.patersonburn.co.nz/book-appointment -locations
