🗣️ Speech-Language Therapy Awareness Week & Te Wiki o te Reo Māori — a beautiful week to celebrate together! 🌿

This week we’re celebrating two things close to our hearts: the vital role speech-language therapy plays in helping tamariki and adults communicate, connect, and thrive — and Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, honouring the beauty and importance of te reo Māori in Aotearoa.

At Cornerstone Therapy, communication is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s supporting a child using AAC to share their first words, helping a whānau navigate feeding challenges, or building confidence in everyday conversation — every voice matters, in every language.

Kia kaha te reo Māori! Let’s celebrate the many ways we connect, kōrero, and grow together. 💬💛

For years, experts called Hari Srinivasan “low-functioning.”

He lost his speech before he was two. He was diagnosed autistic at three. And because he couldn’t talk, people assumed there wasn’t much going on underneath.

They were wrong. Hari understood everything. He always had. He just had no way to show it, until he was 12 and learned to type. Typing gave him a voice.

Today Hari is a neuroscientist and PhD candidate at Vanderbilt, studying the sensory world he has lived inside his whole life. He is minimally speaking and communicates by typing, often one finger at a time. He is also multilingual, a published poet, and co-authored a foreword with Temple Grandin.

The boy they underestimated is now doing the research that will help scientists understand people just like him.

Our amazing therapy team wrapped up the year with a cocktail/ mocktail making session and Vietnamese roll-wrapping class. Lots of laughs, great food, and even better company. Grateful for this hardworking team!

This week, the unstoppable crew at Cornerstone Therapy swapped therapy sessions for secret codes and puzzles in a local escape room adventure — and guess what?

🎉 We made it onto the ADVANCED leaderboard… with 20 minutes to spare! That’s right, your favorite therapy team isn’t just great at unlocking potential — we also crush escape rooms. 💥🧠

The speech therapy team talked circles around clues 💬, the occupational therapy and Physiotherapy crew mastered every lock and puzzle like a fine-motor-fueled dream team 🔐✋, and somehow we made it out without using any reward charts (okay, maybe just one). 😅
