Many people see navel cupping and think:
Isn’t it just placing a cup over the belly button?
But in New Balance Acupuncture (NBA),
the navel is not treated as an ordinary area.
It is an important centre of the body.
From a Chinese medicine perspective, the navel can reflect deeper patterns related to the organs, Qi movement, cold, dampness, stagnation, abdominal tension, and lower-jiao weakness.
Navel cupping is not only about creating a strong cupping mark.
It can help practitioners observe:
✔ abdominal cold ✔ dampness ✔ digestive weakness
✔ Qi stagnation ✔ lower abdominal weakness
✔ local tension ✔ the body’s immediate response
Some patients may feel warmth after navel cupping.
Some may feel the abdomen becomes lighter.
Some may even feel the navel area becomes colder.
This is where clinical thinking becomes important.
The question is not simply: “Did cupping work?”
The real questions are:
Why did the patient feel cold? Why did the abdomen feel lighter? Why did the response appear quickly or slowly? What does this reaction suggest about the patient’s body condition? Should we continue, adjust, or combine it with another treatment?
The real value is not only learning how to cup the navel.
It is learning how to read the response.
Because many patients do not present with only one simple problem.
They may have abdominal coldness, digestive weakness, constipation, diarrhoea, lower back weakness, women’s health concerns, heaviness, poor circulation, or long-term constitutional imbalance.
If we only ask, “Where is the pain?” or “Which point should I use?”
our thinking may become too narrow.
This is the kind of clinical judgement we train in New Balance Acupuncture. Not just more techniques.
A more complete clinical system.
