Hamilton Community Men's Shed - NZ

Hamilton Community Men's Shed - NZ Shed members are people who enjoy meeting together informally to fix or try new things with tools and by sharing life and technical skills. (Thursday am)

Doing practical activities in a congenial environment can be therapeutic for people who may have experienced changes in their lifestyles. There are opportunities for women to also be involved in the shed.

Variety was in evidence on Wednesday morning. A few photos of members projects. New members are welcome. You don’t have to be skilled just willing to have a go and learn. Some members just enjoy a natter and a cuppa.

If you would like to try polishing kauri gum then visit the shed on a Wednesday morning to give it a go.

Two projects that embody the ethos of our shed. Members are encouraged to challenge their skill sets especially their creative ones. Being active and challenged are what drives our mental well-being. Robbie has made this leaf dish from pine and burnt and oiled it to emphasis the beautiful grain he exposed.
Charlie has created this patu as a special gift for his son. He has designed and constructed the base. He commissioned a firm to do the sign work. Well done guys.

Members have been busy refreshing the shed spaces and removing surplus or obsolete equipment. It is beginning to look more efficient and organised. Well done.

Our Hamilton shed provides members opportunities to undertake their own projects. This morning I captured some of these projects; two sculptural and a makeup kit. Two guys were dressing some wood on the thicknesser while a small group were discussing how a donated tool might work.

We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of the Hamilton Community Men's Shed - NZ David and his skilled team have just delivered a second custom-crafted activity board for Rainbow Place.

These boards are a vital addition to our specialist children’s service, offering sensory play and engagement for our tamariki. The generosity of the Men’s Shed in gifting not one, but two of these boards shows the power of local community groups coming together.

On behalf of the staff and the families who will enjoy these for years to come—thank you, David, for your craftsmanship and your heart.

The shed was a hive of activity this morning. As usual a wide range of individual projects were being undertaken. If you’re interested in joining come down to the shed at any time and chat with a supervisor. No special skills are required.

John - I am sharing this excerpt from another post because I think the story of this sculpture is worth sharing.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘀 by The Accidental Artist

Recycled Materials
700 mm H x 200 mm W x 600 mm D
Original artwork, Freestanding

One of the beautiful pieces in our current exhibition 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 and paired with a beautiful personal write up from the artist. (Shared with permission)

This sculpture is a saxophone, but it doesn’t play a note. It wasn’t made to. It’s made from the offcuts of a life spent building, repairing, and keeping things running on the land, in sheds, in seasons that don’t pause for illness or regret.

These days, I carry more than my age; I have many health challenges, the kind of quiet battles many men don’t talk about until it’s too late. This piece is part of my way of breaking that silence.
Music has always moved me. It speaks where words fall short. But I never learned to play. There was always something more “practical” to do. This saxophone is a symbol of that dream I let rust in the background.

Welded from what was once discarded. It doesn’t make music, but it tells a story: about regret, resilience, and the value in opening up even if it’s late in the game. It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to create, to feel, to speak. And that health isn’t just the body it’s the soul, too - 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹

Another typical Wednesday at the shed. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. Movember begins this weekend when men’s health is a focus. Note in these photos the variety of projects undertaken by members.
