A few months back I offered the Mythic Grief exploration with the myth of Sedna, in-person & also online. Both were so beautiful ~ the wisdom, stories & depths of vulnerability that were shared was heart~opening & real, which I know many of us are looking for nowadays!

It was interesting because my astrologer friend Maria Adlam was speaking to me after our Circle and spoke of Sedna (a dwarf planet as well as the myth!) being in our skies now for the first time in a very long time…11,000 years apparently it takes her journey, I had no idea!

The Sedna myth had come to me in my attention, wanting to be explored (the same thing had happened when I facilitated the Inanna mythic journey and the astrology aligned ~ love how the goddess can speak through us in her mystery!)

Maria shared with me Sedna is in our skies & will be for some time, and because both times I facilitated this Mythic Grief Exploration with Sedna were so beautiful, and full as we are only a small group each time, I am going to offer it again whilst she newly graces our skies.

In the myth, Sedna's own fingers are cut away & what she lost became the very creatures that sustain her people. She invites us to descend into grief & find a language for it, to let what has been frozen & unspoken be shared & witnessed.

In a place we can remember from long ago, or perhaps it was yesterday or tomorrow, or perhaps it resides within the intricate webbings of our bone marrow…if we go into the blackness, the place where the veils are always thin, where the people remember, and the mycelia sings us songs of stars…Bear Woman emerges from the great void within the hollows, the womb of the Mother.

This Winter, like all Winters, she has slept a deep little death, curled into the warmth of her being, her heartdrum slowww, its rhythm of languid pulsing currents in ocean depths, of black tinged indigo, silent and dark…
..And now She emerges pregnant with dream symbols and walking with liminal realms clinging to her furs. She is Bear, Woman, Cave, Tree, Roots, Fruits, Mother, Matter…

Bear, along with this Imbolc season we're in ~ the Stirrings of Spring...think cold weather & daffodils... reminds us of rest, silence & regeneration, dreams, death & rebirth, the wisdom of hibernation and emergence.

This is the theme of our Circle this Sunday in Pirongia...in 'Banked Embers & Bear Medicine' we explore with Bear ~ Winter's hidden work, emergence, myth & symbol ~ & celebrate the time of Imbolc.

Sedna ~ A Mythic Grief Exploration ~ is an online women’s circle & descent into the deep waters of grief, betrayal, rage, tenderness & transformation through the Inuit myth of Sedna, the betrayed daughter who descends into the depths & becomes the keeper of life below the sea.

In the amniotic darkness of the deep inky ocean, we explore the places within ourselves & our ancestry that have been abandoned, cast overboard, cut away, or left tangled & untended...and what it means to tend them with compassion...gently untangling & combing out some of the knots.

Through this myth we explore grief as an initiatory process that restores connection to soul & the depths of our lives, with story-telling, deep sharing & a path~weaving journey ~

Let's gather together in a Grief Circle, held by the myth of Sedna - an Inuit sea goddess whose story tells us of betrayal, loss, & transformation.

Here we honour all the shapes of loss in our lives, from the most heavy-hearted bone-set aches, to simply feeling tender in our place in the world.

What must be mourned? What must be released and tended?
Perhaps a loved one has passed, a relationship ended, there's a move to a new location, change of job...something that didn't turn out the way you would imagined...death of an old way of being or identity...it is all relevant and deserves a space for witness and movement. Maybe there is nothing, but to sit in the openness & awareness that grief offers.

Expressing grief of one thing can release the rushing river of all our feelings. It may begin with the catalyst grief, but once the heart is bared & open, we touch past griefs, ancestral, collective & archetypal griefs. We start with our own & step into the currents of the bleeding heart of all things.

Why would we Circle with grief you may ask? Well it is the simple way of paradox, that by allowing the free-flowing of grief we become freer, everything else flows more freely too; joy, ease, grace...some of our grief circles have been the most fun surprisingly...a beautiful mixture of our hearts tears & laughter!

The myth of Inanna has been calling to me for a couple of years now, her story settling more and more in my being, and I have been holding the bones of the story gently… there has been some resistance to sink allll the way in, because of the depth of her.

I was asked by a dear friend to take her on a journey with Inanna, and with that, I knew now was the time for this deeper dive… then today being Friday the 13th… the day of the Goddess… well I just knew I had to do it now. I needed to talk about it today to set this underworld journey into motion. And I already have 6 women ready to go before I even write this! So this feels like a definite nod that this is the right time for many.

Myth is a map of understanding, our own psyche working with the images that come forward for a deeper understanding of self and other.

The story of Inanna’s Descent is an inner map of the journey of descent and rising. It is a core initiation blueprint of our heroine’s journeys. It was one of the earliest recorded myths in ancient Sumer around 4000 years ago, and it offers us a universal process for our unique life paths ~ through shock, grief, separation, loss, struggle....

We go on this mythic journey with Inanna as she descends into the underworld, shedding the symbols of status, identity, and protection at each of the seven gates… dies… and returns. We listen for where it echoes within our own thresholds of change, grief, power, and rebirth.

Through storytelling and an exploration of characters and symbols we move through the layers of what it means to metaphorically die to who we were, to meet the parts of ourselves we have pushed into the shadow, and to emerge with all of who we are, with the depth of wisdom that can arise when women gather to listen deeply to themselves and each other.

Fear is a primal instinct. It invites us to listen… to our intuition and to what needs attention.

It is normal to feel uncertainty and worry during pregnancy.

Fear is often presented as something we must resist at all times, as though giving it any space will somehow manifest the very thing we do not want. So when fear arises, we try to avoid it. We do anything but feel it. We push it back.

What if fear is a liminal state and an invitation to step over a threshold?

We explore your ‘Birth Tiger’ in a curious & grounded way, through questions, conversation & guided journeying.

You will gain a deeper understanding of yourself and practice your ability to cope with whatever unfolds.

🌾We arrive shortly at Lughnasadh, which is the the first of the harvest festivals on the Celtic Wheel of the Year🌾

It is different now, from times of old...and we can adjust the lens to our present lives, on this land, and the metaphoric meaning of our personal and wider harvests, whilst remembering the ancestral threads.

🌾We connect & Circle in the honouring of abundance, gratitude, and acknowledging what has been birthed (or not) as we turn towards our Autumn tinted late-Summer 🌾

We will make a Lughnasadh inspired craft, share food, along with song, myth, sharing, ceremony... & perhaps some dancing if the mood should take us there...

You may have heard the Selkie story’s, those women & men who would shed their furs of their lives in the salty embrace of the sea, walk ashore and find adventure, love with humans, bear children of the land…

…and eventually hear the deep calling, the echo of home-in-the-bones...

I love to find metaphor in myth, story & everyday life that feels relevant for what we move through in life, and especially for my work with Birth Story Medicine.

My youngest son loves seals at the moment, and whenever those sleek ones with the deep black obsidian mirrors for eyes show up, I always feel that wonder step in, and think of the selkies & the ocean....

This writing is inspired by listening to the stories that mothers share with me about their births.

Today, I’m birthing Mama~Cocoon…

The metaphor of the cocoon is what I would like mother’s to experience when they journey with me.
For me, a cocoon is many things.
There is paradox here.
It is a deep, warm, comfortable cloud of love and potentiality
AND it can be a very uncomfortable place of unravelling & of dissolution.
It is a place of unbecoming, becoming, and the great unknown.
It is both a vessel of transformation and the thing that is transformed.

The last year or so of listening and transforming stories has me deep in awe of women, of mothers
(and fathers, too)
midwives & doulas ~
the initiation of birth and all of the joy, pain & grief that can come along with it.

In 2024 I became a Healing Birth Practitioner through Carla Sargent, a leading voice in NZ birth trauma
(and a beloved catalyst in my own story many many moons ago);
and throughout 2025, I have been deep in apprenticeship with Pam England of Birth Story Medicine (life-changing!)

What led me to this path was my own birth experiences,
how they have shaped the woman I have become,
through my stories, meaning making
and the weaving & understanding more and more deeply
through the spiralling awareness that cycles through.

I have an evolving vision that I will continue to expand into;
but here I am, crossing the threshold
to begin the journey of what this will become,
and I know that what I think may the path I am on
may well evolve and change
as I am soaking in the real stories & lives of mothers & families.

(I will still be offering my Circles & Ceremony's here on this page ... I know I have been quiet but I have offerings in the pipeline!)
