Most people associate food safety with restaurants, commercial kitchens, and food recalls, but in reality, many cases of foodborne illness start much closer to home.

Each year, an estimated 600 million people worldwide become unwell from contaminated food, and around 420,000 people die as a result. It’s a reminder that food safety is something that matters in everyday kitchens.

Simple things like undercooking food, cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat items, or food being left out too long can all increase the risk of illness. For those living with food allergies, the risks can be even more immediate, with accidental exposure to allergens potentially causing serious or life-threatening reactions. Clear labelling, careful preparation, and avoiding cross-contact are essential parts of keeping people safe.

Good habits at home like proper handwashing, safe storage, and correct cooking temperatures are some of the most effective ways to prevent both foodborne illness and allergic reactions.

When your little one is unwell, it can feel overwhelming trying to work out what’s going on and what to do next.

This lovely feedback really captures the reassurance parents are looking for in those moments.

A parent recently brought in their 4-year-old with a fever and shared how calm and caring the experience was. The doctor took the time to do a thorough check, explained everything clearly, and made sure there was real understanding before they left. Most importantly, their child felt comfortable and at ease throughout the visit.

Kind, patient care can make all the difference when you’re navigating sick kids, and it’s always a relief to leave feeling supported and reassured.

Just a reminder that all GP clinics will be closed on King’s Birthday, Monday 1 June.

If you need urgent medical care over the public holiday, our urgent care clinics remain open:

• Te Rapa Urgent Care — Open 24 hours
• Rototuna Urgent Care — Open 7am–10pm

Winter bugs and accidents don’t take public holidays, so please don’t hesitate to seek care if you need it.

From the team at Tui Medical, we hope you have a safe and relaxing long weekend.

“Efficient and helpful.” Two words we love to hear!

We know the feeling of needing an appointment when the books look full.

Our admin teams work hard behind the scenes to manage cancellations and get patients seen as quickly as possible. We really appreciated this feedback for our Te Rapa team, it’s a great reminder of why that extra bit of effort to follow up on a waitlist matters.

A big thanks to our staff member for staying on top of the schedule, and to our patient for the kind words.

Kindness is good for the heart. It’s Pink Shirt Day!

As healthcare providers, we know that being bullied isn’t just a social issue. Constant stress from exclusion affects everything from your mental wellbeing to your heart health and immune system.

By wearing pink, we are making a commitment to be a safe space for our community. We stand with the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand in the fight to turn the tide on bullying.

How you can take part:
- Wear Pink: Show your support visually!
- Be an Upstander: If you see someone being treated unfairly, speak up or offer support.
- Check-in: If you or a loved one are struggling with the effects of bullying, our GPs are here to listen and provide mental health support.

Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu – Speak Up, Stand Together.

Important Update: Expanded Funding for Melanoma Treatment

Starting 1 May 2026, Pharmac is widening funded access to life-changing immunotherapy treatments (Nivolumab and Ipilimumab) for advanced melanoma. This update is a major milestone for New Zealanders, ensuring our standard of care reflects the best international practices.

What this means for eligible patients:
- Earlier intervention: Medicines can now be used before surgery to help shrink tumours.
- Reduced burden: For many, this combined approach can lead to fewer follow-up requirements post-surgery.
- Better outcomes: A more effective pathway for those navigating Stage 3B to Stage 4 melanoma.

If you have questions about how these changes affect your or a loved one’s treatment plan, please reach out. Our GPs are here to help and support you.
