Most people associate food safety with restaurants, commercial kitchens, and food recalls, but in reality, many cases of foodborne illness start much closer to home.
Each year, an estimated 600 million people worldwide become unwell from contaminated food, and around 420,000 people die as a result. It’s a reminder that food safety is something that matters in everyday kitchens.
Simple things like undercooking food, cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat items, or food being left out too long can all increase the risk of illness. For those living with food allergies, the risks can be even more immediate, with accidental exposure to allergens potentially causing serious or life-threatening reactions. Clear labelling, careful preparation, and avoiding cross-contact are essential parts of keeping people safe.
Good habits at home like proper handwashing, safe storage, and correct cooking temperatures are some of the most effective ways to prevent both foodborne illness and allergic reactions.
