"Why do your women usually birth so well??"
"How come your emergency transfer rate is so low??" I get asked by my colleagues...

Here is one of my top recommendation as a Midwife for supporting a positive birth experience: ✨

✨ Preparing for Birth with Acuneedling (=Acupuncture by a Midwife)✨

Did you know Acuneedling can be used in the final weeks of pregnancy to help prepare your body for labour?

Pre-birth Acuneedling (from 36 weeks, once a week until birth) is designed to support your body's natural physiology - not to force labour, but to help it unfold more efficiently.

💫 What can it support?
• Quality contractions once labour starts
• Cervical ripening
• Baby's optimal positioning
• Your energy and stamina for labour
• A calmer nervous system: helping you feel safe, grounded, and empowered

Research by Wellington based acupuncturist Dr. Debra Betts (PhD) and Sue Lennox (NZ Midwife) has shown positive outcomes. In an observational study of women receiving pre-birth acupuncture, there was:
• Shorter average labour duration
• Reduced rates of medical interventions: e.g. epidurals (31% less), inductions (35% less) Caesarean Sections (32% less), increased vaginal births (9%)

Acuneedling is commonly used by midwives and practitioners throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world to support pregnancy and birth preparation.

If you're nearing the end of your pregnancy and looking for a gentle, safe, drug-free and evidence-informed way to prepare for birth, Acuneedling may be a beautiful addition to your care.

AND YES, YOU CAN SHARE THIS SECRET WITH YOUR FRIEND 😂

Oh ICM (International Confederation of Midwives) what have you done...!🧐🤯
Over the past 25 years I have worked alongside INCREDIBLE indigenous midwives in many different countries. I deeply bow to your wisdom, knowledge and generations of experience in caring for women, babies and our communities.
The recent suspension of ICM's Position Statement on Partnership Between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Midwives leaves me deeply concerned. Indigenous midwifery knowledge deserves recognition, respect, and a strong voice within our profession!

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/199LUbJKYR/

From across the world, Indigenous Midwives came to the ICM Congress to learn that not only had the ICM statement in support of Indigenous midwifery been rescinded, but that the term “Indigenous midwifery” had been made explicitly unwelcome at this Congress.

This systemic erasure of Indigenous midwives, babies, and birthing people is a continuation of the colonial project that has led to the genocide of Indigenous people around the globe.

From Turtle Island to Gaza, from Aoteroa to Sápmi, Indigenous midwifery is the foundation of midwifery practice anywhere and everywhere. It is the collective heritage of our craft.

In their relentless attempt to patent the term “midwife,” ICM standards have criminalized our traditional practitioners and disparaged our ancestral medicines, even as colonial midwives appropriated our ancestral practices and technologies.

No matter the language, ICM does not, has never, will never own the term “Midwife.” Midwifery belongs first and foremost to the communities we serve.

We call on our allies, here and around the world, to hold ICM accountable. To assert their responsibility to repair the colonial legacies imposed on Indigenous peoples. And to stand up in defense of a midwifery that is inclusive to all.

Because if you want a million more midwives, you must start with Indigenous communities. You start with us.

Today I celebrated International Midwives Day with our wonderful midwifery ākonga and my beautiful colleagues 🩷

I shared the story of a recent birth - a reminder of how meaningful, sacred, and important this work truly is.

Especially in these challenging times, this calling MATTERS.
How babies enter the world MATTERS.
How women experience birth MATTERS.
Midwives MATTER.

Midwives have the power to change the world:
one baby at a time,
one birth at a time,
one family at a time ✨

What’s your superpower? ❤️

Finally some good news - THE MIDWIVES WON!! 🙌🙌🙌
(That only took 10yrs of fighting incl. court but we are a resilient tribe!)
One day there shall be equity, recognition for our hard work and fair pay - still a long road ahead- but today is a celebration!

"This decision is a vindication of all the efforts we've made over many years to be properly valued," midwife Sheryl Wright says.
