W I N T E R has arrived, and with it come sore throats, coughs, colds, and other bugs circulating in the community.

Pregnancy can increase your risk of becoming unwell, so it's important to take extra care. Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick and practise good hand hygiene.

If you do become unwell, make sure you get plenty of rest, stay well hydrated, and consider simple remedies such as paracetamol (as directed) and warm lemon and honey drinks.

If you are considering taking any other medications, please speak with your pharmacist or GP before taking them.

Stay well!

🌿 Gentle Reminder About Our On-Call Service 🌿

The on-call phone is available for URGENT MATERNITY CARES ONLY. The on-call phone is available 24/7 to support women and families experiencing genuine URGENT MATTERS, so we ask that you please consider whether your concern can wait until normal business hours before calling.

Please call the on-call phone if you experience any of the following:

• No or reduced fetal movements from 28 weeks
• Vaginal bleeding
• Waters leaking before 37 weeks
• Leaking fluid and your baby is breech (or not head down)
• Green or brown fluid leaking at any gestation
• Symptoms of pre-eclampsia, including headaches, visual disturbances, upper abdominal pain, or significant swelling
• Painful contractions before 37 weeks' gestation
• Constant abdominal pain
• Any abdominal trauma, accident, fainting episode, or fall
• You are in labour after 37 weeks and contractions are occurring every 3–4 minutes

We understand that pregnancy can bring many questions and concerns. However, the on-call midwife may have been awake all night attending births and may only have just gone to bed. For this reason, we ask that the on-call phone be used for urgent concerns only, with non-urgent matters addressed via text or email.

Texts and emails are monitored regularly and are generally answered promptly during business hours, between 8:00am and 5:00pm.

Thank you for helping us ensure that urgent calls can be responded to quickly and that the on-call service remains available for those who need immediate care. 💜

Late pregnancy can feel intense — and sometimes the “normal” symptoms can really catch you off guard 🤍

A reminder that many of these are COMMON in the third trimester:

• Pelvic pressure
• Lightning crotch/sharp zaps
• Braxton Hicks tightenings
• Swollen feet and hands
• Needing to p*e constantly
• Heartburn and reflux
• Lower back pain
• Trouble sleeping
• Increased discharge
• Feeling emotional, overwhelmed, or “over it”
• Baby movements feeling bigger, slower, stretchier, or more uncomfortable as space gets tight
• Random waves of exhaustion even after doing very little

Your body is carrying a growing baby, extra fluid, increased blood volume, and preparing for labour all at once. That's a lot.

That said — “common” does not always mean “ignore it.” Please CALL US 020 438 2123 if you experience:
• Reduced baby movements
• Severe headache or vision changes
• Sudden severe swelling
• Bleeding
• Fluid leaking
• Fever
• Strong regular contractions
• Or anything that feels wrong to you

You deserve reassurance. You are not “being dramatic” for checking in 💛

H E A D A C H E S can be really common in early pregnancy, often due to hormonal changes, fatigue, dehydration, or not eating regularly.

Simple ways to help manage them include:
💧 Increasing hydration — aim to drink water regularly throughout the day
💊 Taking 2 x paracetamol every 6 hours if needed (never have more than 4g in 24 hours)
😴 Prioritising rest and slowing down where possible

If headaches are severe, persistent, associated with visual changes, or you’re worried at all, please seek medical advice. 🤍

Every day we have the privilege of working alongside incredible women.

Pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood ask so much of a woman — physically, emotionally, and mentally. We see women rise to the challenge with courage, instinct, and capacity to care for those around them.

It’s a reminder that strength doesn’t always look loud or dramatic. Sometimes it looks like showing up, trusting your body, asking questions, and doing the very best you can for your baby and yourself.

On international women’s day, we take a moment to recognise and appreciate the women we walk alongside in our work and community.

To the women and families we support — thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey.
