Some people mentor.

Some people sponsor.

Some people quietly change the trajectory of an entire profession.

Tonight we celebrated Dame Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer - a clinician, researcher, leader and mentor whose impact reaches far beyond the operating theatre, the clinic or academia.

Her legacy is not only in the patients she has helped or the science she has advanced, but in the people she has backed, encouraged and opened doors for along the way.

The title of Dame recognises a remarkable career to date. Those who know her know it also reflects remarkable courage, vision, generosity and determination.

Congratulations, Helen. This honour could not be more deserved.

The hard truths about upper eyelid surgery…

The surgery is the easy part. Healing takes time.

Bruising, swelling and scars are a normal part of the journey. While scars are placed in the natural eyelid crease, they don’t disappear overnight. They gradually soften and fade over 3, 6 and even 12 months, depending on your skin type and healing response.

My philosophy is simple: heal well once.

Rest. Ice. Be patient. Follow the instructions.

The best results come from respecting the healing process, not rushing it.

Surgery takes an hour. Healing takes months. The result is worth the wait.

Three years as Chair of the New Zealand Branch of RANZCO ✅

A huge privilege to hand the role over to Dr Jesse Gale in Queenstown earlier this month.

Being the first woman in the role taught me a lot about leadership, visibility, culture, and the importance of who feels seen in leadership spaces.

Some of the most meaningful conversations during my term centred around New Zealand identity within our binational College and the kaupapa of a NZ Branch korowai. Huge gratitude to Chrissie Cowan of Kāpō Māori Aotearoa, the master weavers at Te Puia, Federal leadership, and many others who approached these discussions with such openness and generosity.

Less a project. More a shared journey of learning.

Very grateful for the people, conversations, and friendships formed along the way.

And finally Jesse - the Branch is in excellent hands 🤍

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty isn’t about creating a “perfect” eye. It’s about understanding what matters to the patient and tailoring surgery to that.

This lovely patient had naturally low brows and did not want her brow position altered. Instead, we focused on carefully removing the excess upper eyelid skin that was causing heaviness and hooding - while respecting her natural anatomy.

The result? Fresher, brighter eyes that still look like her. 🤍

Good oculoplastic surgery is often less about changing faces… and more about listening well.

Long days. Bright lights. Great humans. 🤍

The work is serious, the focus is constant, and the days can be long - but having a team that can laugh together makes all the difference.

Grateful for the people who bring skill, calm, kindness… and very questionable singing to theatre life.

What a week.

Outstanding science, thoughtful discussion, brilliant people, beautiful Queenstown - and all the moments in between that make these meetings so valuable. The catch-ups over coffee, walks between sessions, dinners, mentor–mentee conversations, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.

A particularly meaningful meeting for me personally as I handed over the RANZCO NZ Branch Chair role to Dr Jesse Gale after three years in the position. It has been a huge privilege to serve the profession in this role and to work alongside so many passionate people committed to eye health in Aotearoa.

Feeling grateful for the experiences, friendships, challenges, laughs, and opportunities that came with the role - and excited to see where the next chapter takes the NZ Branch.

Last year: DNF.
This year: finish line.

Lessons from the journey - enjoy the process, cross-training makes you stronger, and consistency beats everything. Just keep hanging in there.

So grateful for the people behind the scenes - coaches, physio, family and friends who keep me moving forward. .co.nz
Also amazing to see 43% of the field were women strong, determined, and showing up 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♀️ Life

Five years.
One specialty.
Countless patients helped along the way.
Ophthalmology training starts here — and it works best when no one climbs alone.
