πŸ’œ Measles is in New Zealand – Is your family protected? πŸ’œ

Measles is highly contagious and is currently present in New Zealand. One of the best ways to protect your children, your family and your community is to make sure both your child’s and your own immunisations are up to date.

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps and rubella. Children receive their first dose at 12 months and their second dose at 15 months as part of the National Immunisation Schedule. Two doses, given from 12 months of age, protect about 99% of people from measles.

Many adults may not have received both MMR doses, particularly those born between 1969 and 2004. If you're not sure whether you've had 2 doses, it's worth checking with your GP or nurse.

πŸ’œ Check your family's immunisations are up to date.

If you're unsure what vaccinations are due, call Reception on 03 755 8180 to book an appointment with a clinician.

πŸ’œ Women's Health Week – A Little Time for You πŸ’œ

One of the best things you can do for your future health is to stay on top of recommended screening.

In New Zealand, national screening programmes include:
πŸŽ€ Breast screening
🌸 Cervical screening
πŸ’œ Bowel screening

Screening can help detect some cancers early, before symptoms appear, when treatment can be more effective.

Cervical screening has also changed, with HPV testing and self-testing options available for eligible people.

πŸ“… Been putting off your screening?
πŸ“¬ Received an invitation and haven't got around to it?
πŸ’¬ Not sure if you're due?

Take a little time to find out.

Looking after your future self starts with one small step today. πŸ’œ

πŸ’œ Women’s Health Week – Put Yourself on the List πŸ’œ

Women often spend so much time looking after everyone else that their own health can slip down the list.

This Women’s Health Week, take a little time for you.

🩺 Book that check-up you've been putting off.
πŸ’¬ Talk to your clinician about something that's been worrying you.
πŸ“… Check that your health screening is up to date.
πŸ’œ Make time for your own wellbeing.

Women's health changes throughout life, and it's important to recognise the unique needs and challenges at each stage. Health New Zealand encourages women to advocate for themselves, ask for help when they need it, and make their health a priority.

You don't have to do everything at once. One small step is a good place to start.

✨ Meet the Practice ✨

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ Introducing: Emma Kay
🩺 Role: Practice Manager

Kia ora, I’m the Practice Manager at Westland Medical Centre. I have held this position for the last year but been at WMC for over 9 years now.

I’m passionate about both healthcare and the West Coast and am doing my best to ensure we are able to provide high quality care close to home for the people who live in this beautiful part of the world.

My husband Jeff and I have 2 wonderful children, aged 2 and 5, and a 7 year old collie x staffy rescue dog.

When I’m not at work you will usually find me close to my whānau, often outdoors, maybe even with a gold pan in my hands!

πŸ’œ Looking for Health Information? Start with Reputable Sources πŸ’œ

We've all done it - you notice a symptom, search it online, and before long you're convinced it's something serious. While the internet can be a helpful place to learn more about your health, not all health information is accurate, up to date, or relevant to your individual situation.

If you're looking for trusted health information, we recommend using trusted New Zealand websites:
πŸ’œ Healthify NZ – https://healthify.nz/
πŸ’œ Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – https://www.healthnz.govt.nz/health-topics
πŸ’œ KidsHealth – https://www.kidshealth.org.nz/
πŸ’œ Plunket (child health and development) – https://www.plunket.org.nz/child-health-concerns-and-symptoms/
πŸ’œ Medical Secrets (dermatologist-trusted skin advice) – https://medicalsecrets.com/

Remember, websites can provide general information, but they can't take your medical history, examine you, or provide personalised advice.

πŸ’¬ If you're worried about your health or something doesn't feel right, the best place to start is by having a kōrero with one of our clinicians.
