We stand alongside the New Zealand College of Midwives, in their response to the ICM Board's decision to suspend the Position Statement on Partnership between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Midwives.

We recognise that this weighs most heavily on our Indigenous midwives, here and around the world. Partnership between Indigenous and non-Indigenous midwives is not a peripheral issue for our profession; it is foundational to safe, culturally grounded care for wāhine and pΔ“pi everywhere.

We support the call for the Position Statement to be reinstated, developed in genuine partnership with Indigenous midwives, rather than left suspended pending a review process that risks sidelining the very voices it should centre.

This World Breastfeeding Week, we want to talk about something that doesn't get airtime often enough: D-MER, or Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex.

For some people who are breastfeeding/chestfeeding, letdown doesn't just bring milk, it brings a sudden wave of dread, sadness, or emptiness, seconds before the milk flows. It passes quickly, often within a minute or two, but it can happen every single feed. It is not sadness about feeding and it is not a sign of failing at it. It is a physiological reflex, believed to be linked to a brief dip in dopamine at letdown. It is distinct from postnatal depression, though the two can coexist and be mistaken for one another.

D-MER is still under-recognised, which means many parents experience it in silence, sometimes for months, before finding out it has a name and isn't their fault. Make sure to reach out to support services in your area if you feel like you might be experiencing this.

Every step helps FASD-CAN Inc πŸ’• lovely to see you today Stephanie at the Sector Leaders Day.

This is the first time in New Zealand there has been FASD-dedicated assessment, diagnosis and support in community settings, helping children, young people and their families access earlier care. By identifying children earlier and supporting families sooner, we can improve lifelong health, learning and development outcomes.
