At Kerikeri Retirement Village's Tui Wing, our specialist dementia care community, we are creating something truly special.

Working alongside residents and their families, we are recreating meaningful front doors from their past, transforming treasured memories into personalised decals displayed on residents room doors.
For people living with dementia, familiar images, places, and memories can provide comfort, recognition, and reassurance. These visual reminders help reduce anxiety, support independence, and maintain a valuable sense of identity, connection, and belonging.
As we have gathered these stories, one thing has become very clear: a front door is so much more than an entrance.
Every door tells a story. It represents a lifetime of experiences, family, friendship, love, and connection. It is a symbol of home and the memories that make each person unique.
We are inviting individuals, families, businesses, and community groups to sponsor a door for $750. Your sponsorship will cover the design, production, and installation of a personalised door decal created specifically for one of our residents.
By sponsoring a door, you will help preserve a resident's personal history while creating a more familiar, comforting, and meaningful environment for people living with dementia.
Together, we can celebrate a lifetime of memories and help bring cherished moments back to life.

Last Friday we held our final hoorah to celebrate and farewell the fantastic Brendan Murray Construction Ltd team who have been with us throughout the build of our new community centre🙌🏼

Residents enjoyed meeting the project and site managers, sharing coffee and treats in our beautiful new cafe and celebrating the completion of a project that has transformed our village.

The BMC team have been nothing short of outstanding. Hardworking, professional, efficient and unbelievably quiet for a construction crew! Their dedication and positive attitude made a lasting impression on both staff and residents.

While we’ll miss the buzz of the worksite (and a few the view!) we’re excited to see the team off onto their next project.

Want to come and have a look? We’d love to show you around. Come and enjoy a coffee in our new cafe, explore our beautiful village and discover why so many are choosing to make our village their home 🏡🤗

On Monday we were lucky to be joined by the fabulous Dave McMillan for some live music for our residents. Dave is known internationally for his bluesy, soulful voice and dynamic guitar.
He performed a variety of old time sing along songs and had the residents reminiscing of good times 🤗 Dave McMillan Music

Moments That Matter is a wonderful new initiative recently introduced by the DT team, designed to strengthen Whanaungatanga by bringing our staff and residents together in meaningful and genuine ways. At the heart of this initiative is the belief that the small moments of connection, kindness, laughter, and shared experiences can have a lasting impact on the wellbeing of everyone in our community.

To ensure all residents can be involved and feel included, the event is hosted in a different wing each month. This allows everyone the chance to participate, meet new people, strengthen existing connections, and enjoy quality time together. Whether it's through conversation, activities, shared meals, or simply spending time in each others company, Moments That Matter reminds us that every interaction has the power to brighten someone's day and create cherished memories.

Art has been an important part of creating the atmosphere of our new Community Centre, helping transform it into a space that feels warm, welcoming and connected to our community.

We were fortunate to work with Marita from still life staging, whose expertise and eye for detail helped curate a collection.

One of the standout pieces in our cafe is this beautiful original artwork which has become a real talking point for visitors enjoying the space.

“The paintings I made for the cafe, (and a second that will hang in the renovated existing lounge area when open), were a favour I did in respect and appreciation for the KKRV. They are separate from my professional art practice, and were created as one offs to meet the brief of the project, for which I had to curate a collection of art for the new Community Centre. The interior designer specified the very large size (1700 x 1500 mm) for two particular artworks, and I was unable to find anything of that size in NZ within the very small budget I had. So I made them myself. The artwork had to have bright colors that complimented the interior finishings, and reference our local surroundings or culture. So I selected some yellowing Kawakawa leaves from the trees outside my studio as a starting point, and let the painting take me where it wanted to go. I enjoyed the opportunity to paint differently, more loosely than I normally would, it became a playful experiment focused only on the aesthetics of the piece.” Marita - Still life staging
