Sometimes it starts with a question. A sticky note. A conversation. A whakaaro someone finally feels safe enough to share.

At Hikitia! Te Tai Tokerau, we're always exploring new ways to capture insight, reflect on what we're learning, and understand what's really changing beneath the surface. A big mihi to our rugby league whānau who are showing what community-led prevention can look like. 🏉💙

Players are coming together at full time, to leave the battle on the field before returning home to their partners, tamariki and whānau.

It's a simple but powerful reminder that while rugby league builds toughness, it can also strengthen fathers, relationships and communities.

These are the kinds of local, tikanga-led shifts that create lasting change. Ka mau te wehi. 🙌🏽

Systems change isn't something that happens in isolation.

Today our Hikitia! whānau from across Aotearoa came together for an online Unconference, a space where the agenda is shaped by the people in the room and the conversations that matter most.

These kōrero don't always produce easy answers, but they do create something just as valuable: shared understanding. By bringing together practitioners, systems thinkers and agents of change from across the motu, we can surface the challenges we're seeing in our communities, learn from one another, and strengthen the collective responses needed to create lasting change.

Prevention is complex. That's why these spaces matter.

A huge mihi to everyone who contributed their whakaaro today. Every conversation helps strengthen the movement we're building together, and reminds us that while each community is unique, we're all working towards the same future, where whānau can thrive.

THROWBACK TO TE WIKI TUAHINE

Last month, our rugby league community and more specifically, our tāne, came together to celebrate the strength, leadership and mana of the incredible wāhine who help shape our whānau every day.

Te Wiki Tuahine was a powerful reminder that prevention starts with respect, healthy relationships and recognising the important role wāhine play in our lives and communities.

Ngā mihi to everyone who got behind this kaupapa and helped make it such a meaningful occasion. 💜

Abuse doesn’t come out of nowhere, it grows from little things we don’t always notice. So that’s where change happens, in the Little Matters.

Hikitia! For Our Future are working with Little Matters to provide the tools you can use everyday to help create a future every child can feel safe in 💜 follow along!

⭐️ PUANGA SERIES IN ACTION

There was something pretty special about last week's Puanga wānanga.

Seeing tamariki, parents, grandparents and kaumātua learning alongside one another was a reminder that mātauranga Māori has always been carried through relationships. It isn't simply taught; it is shared, questioned, lived and passed from one generation to the next.

Together we explored the significance of Puanga and Matariki, the maramataka, Te Kaupeka o te Tau, and the deep relationship between the stars, the whenua and the moana. More than learning about the past, it was an opportunity to reconnect with knowledge that continues to guide us today.

These are the kinds of spaces that strengthen identity, deepen connection and create a legacy of learning that transcends generations.
Hikitia! Te Tai Tokerau sends a big mihi to Tiger Tukariri for leading this kaupapa. Stay tuned for more Puanga events to come!

It is so exciting to see The Kāeo Tool Shed featured on Te Karere! 👏🏽

We are proud to support this kaupapa, working alongside rangatahi to help shape a space that's welcoming, mana-enhancing, and opens the door for young people who might not usually see themselves on the tools.

Two ways to get amongst it this Rāhina 7 July - get moving, get creative, or do both!

🏃‍♀️ Whānau Fitness – New Year, New You
9am–10.30am | Omanu House, 180 Omanu Road
Start the morning with Move to Groove, Boxfit and Pump-It Weights. Come for one or give them all a go, all in a fun, supportive environment.

🎨 He Toi, He Tae o Matariki
10am–3pm | Te Pokapū, Kāeo
Create your own Matariki-inspired artwork with Yazma Smith, using lino printmaking and Whangaroa kaitiaki designs. Bring a T-shirt or fabric item to print on, or use the materials provided. There’ll also be Matariki-themed face painting and plenty of time to play and create.

Get your tinana moving, then head down the road and get creative 🎨✨

Bring the whānau. Come for a little or stay for a while. See you apōpō!

“Who gets handed the tools, matters” 🔧🛠️

E Tupu E Rea was about much more than learning practical skills. It was about creating spaces where the people who don't always see themselves picking up the tools feel confident to have a go.

As part of the Puanga mā Matariki ki Whangaroa calendar of events, a group of (mostly!) young people and wāhine came together to build planter boxes, learn new skills and share knowledge alongside some incredible wāhine who led the way as tutors. Along the way, something bigger was happening. Confidence was growing, barriers were being challenged, generations were learning together and new connections were being made across the community.

That's the beauty of community-led kaupapa! Sometimes what you're building isn't just about timber and nails. You're building confidence, belonging and the belief that everyone has something to offer.

Another awesome kaupapa, created by our community, for our community. There’s more to come, so get involved e te whānau🌿✨
