Extra protection for our littlest: Free flu vaccines now available for under 5s.

From today, all children aged 6 months up to their fifth birthday can get a free influenza (flu) vaccine.

This change comes as flu continues to cause high rates of illness and hospitalisations in young children this season, with children under five experiencing some of the highest rates of flu-related hospital care.

The flu season started later than usual and is expected to continue, so it's not too late to get vaccinated. The current flu vaccine is also a good match for the flu virus circulating most widely this year.

- Free for all children aged 6 months to under 5 years, pregnant women, and people aged 65+

- Helps protect against serious illness

- Helps protect your family and community.

Please book in with one of our nurses - (06) 843 8010

Flu vaccinations are still available for 2026

Influenza has made this a tough winter, with many of our patients and their whānau and or staff feeling its effects.

Thankfully, spring is here. But flu can continue to circulate beyond the winter months. So, if you haven’t had your 2026 flu vaccination yet, there’s still an opportunity to have it and good reason.

Many people in our community are eligible for a funded (no-cost) flu vaccine. This includes:
• Everyone aged 65 and over
• Those that are pregnant
• Those with certain long-term health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease
• People with reduced immunity

For anyone who is not eligible for a funded vaccine, the cost is $35. Our team can confirm whether you qualify when you book.

Call our reception team to book a time that suits 06 843 8010.

If you already have an upcoming appointment, you can also ask about receiving your flu vaccine then.

Hawke's Bay is seeing increased cases of flu-like illness.

Let's work together to keep our whānau and communities well this winter by:
🤧 Staying home if you're unwell
😷 Covering coughs and sneezes
🧼 Washing your hands regularly
🏥 Seeking advice from the right healthcare service when needed

Taking these simple steps can help reduce the spread of illness and protect those most at risk.

Please take a moment to read the Winter Wellness messages from Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora and help keep yourself, your whānau and our wider community healthy this winter.

In keeping with Matariki this year, the Matariki tree that is on display beside Reception will have tokens placed, in memory of those of our Medical Centre whanau who have passed in this last year. We remember them with manaaki and aroha.

Our tamariki will place their stars when they visit, to join with those spirits of those now gone from us.

Mānawatia a Matariki.
