From volunteer to community leader

When Clio first put her hand up to volunteer, she was looking for a way to give back to people with additional needs in our community. After discovering StarJam through Volunteering Hawke's Bay, she began building meaningful relationships with participants while exploring a potential career path in special education.

Fast forward a few years, and Clio has become a driving force behind HB Jammers.

Clio was part of the founding committee that helped create HB Jammers, ensuring local young people were able to continue to access the music and dance programmes they loved so much. Today, she serves on the committee, manages social media, and leads her own group as a tutor.

Thanks to the dedication of volunteers like Clio, HB Jammers now supports more than 60 young people across Hawke's Bay. Through music, dance, and performance, participants build confidence, express themselves, form friendships, and connect with their community. Families also find support and connection with others who understand their journey.

For Clio, the experience has been life-changing too.

"HB Jammers has given me so much. I've gained skills, confidence, and valuable experience, but most of all, HB Jammers brings me joy."
